It was disheartening to see others speaking about the coworker behind his back.

Doing a little background research about things that seem off can save a person from a lot of trouble. A Reddit user who goes by u/TheFoolishJester_ shared a personal experience on Thursday, September 3, 2026, recalling how he learned this lesson the hard way. He noticed one of his colleagues, Chris, was always isolated despite everyone at their office being friendly. Feeling generous, he reached out to him and initiated a conversation. The next few weeks felt weird, but a statement the coworker made to him one day became the last straw. It made him realize why no one ever connected with him.

The man explained that it was disheartening to see his colleague alone. He noted how others spoke about Chris behind his back, making him feel worse for the guy. Out of sympathy, he approached Chris during one lunch break and started talking to him. From that day, the duo interacted every day. “When I got in for the day, when we passed in the halls, and during every single lunch break,” Chris kept talking; no minute was spared. The odd part was that he was always the one speaking, while the employee failed to get a word in during every attempt to participate in the conversation. One day, when they were discussing trips, the worker tried to pitch in. “Ten words in, he just says, ‘I don’t care,’ and starts talking to somebody else while I’m mid-sentence.”

At first, it seemed like no one spoke to Chris because he kept talking. He’d overshare about everything from his passion for cars to his Tinder matches. But that one instance made everything clear. It finally dawned on the employee that Chris was being avoided because he never really listened or allowed others to have a genuine conversation with him. “He just wants some poor sap to talk at,” he shared. The worker noted that he was exhausted and would soon stop this daily interaction. Commenters felt sorry for him and suggested ways to get rid of him. u/BootVillain joked, “Hit him with the same ‘I don’t care’ that he hit you with.”

u/Early_Analyst9529 suggested, “Before you snap, tell him what he's doing; it might just be the kick he needs.” u/GullibleScallion1519 added, “Being direct might hurt feelings but rarely leaves room for confusion.” It’s easy to make assumptions, especially in a setting like an office, where you’re exposed to multiple opinions or ideas before hearing what the truth really is. In this case, the man thought the coworker was just being sidelined until reality hit him hard. In another instance, multiple workers were convinced one colleague’s wife cheated on him after seeing his newborn’s pictures.

The child was Black while the dad was white, and employees made their assumptions quickly. For a long time, they acted weirdly and felt sorry for the new dad. Finally, when a coworker shared what was on everyone’s mind, the man put their rumors to rest. He brought a picture of his family, featuring his wife and child, and showed it to the same coworker. As soon as they learned his wife was Black, they were left embarrassed. They instantly regretted assuming without checking the facts.
