Woman revealed on a first date that she made more money than him — his jokes afterward exposed how uncomfortable he was with it
Many people want independent partners but don’t realize that this may also mean changing several traditional aspects of the relationship. One woman, Emily, who goes by @em.inthedark on Threads, shared a post on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, explaining how her date had similar expectations. The moment she revealed that she earned more than him, he appeared uneasy and tried hard to hide it. However, his remarks that followed showed that he was insecure and hadn’t thought the entire dynamic through.
The conversation was going well during their first meeting. The man appeared to be confident and showed no red flags early in the interaction. The second they started discussing their professions and the topic of money, he started getting awkward. He first asked what she did for work and then questioned how much she made. Emily honestly told him, and it was more than he made. His energy changed, and he got quieter. A little while later, he “started making jokes about 'women who make more money.'” It was an instant giveaway that he was not very happy about the situation. Later, he said he “prefers to be the one who earns more because otherwise he ‘doesn’t feel like a man.’"

What followed was the weirdest part. He still wanted to split the bill. It left Emily confused. She mentioned that if a man wants a woman to be independent and pay for her meal, how much she makes shouldn’t be a reason for insecurity. Commenters advised her to take his reaction as a warning. @graciemeowmeow wrote, “Run, that mindset means he feels he has nothing to offer besides money.” @dory007100 added, “I’m confused. Why would you even tell him? That’s none of his business.” @laylaymous remarked, “You didn’t do anything to make him feel bad; he did it to himself.”

Having expectations while dating is not an issue. However, they should be realistic and should match what you’re bringing to the table. Furthermore, the reality and lifestyle that come with these expectations should also be embraced. In another dating fiasco, a woman became doubtful when the man spent 20 minutes complaining about an ex who he claimed was “materialistic.”
During their meal, she ordered only two items while he ordered everything from appetizers to dessert. When it was time for the bill, he asked if she was willing to split it. She honestly told him she’d split the bill by paying for what she ordered. This arrangement should have worked for him, but it left him confused and disappointed. He expected her to pay half of the total, while complaining about others being materialistic. Seeing that he was being unreasonable with his expectations, the woman decided to unmatch with the man soon after the date.
