Woman said her husband had cancer as she demanded their seatmate move a bag — the passenger’s refusal prompted a flight attendant’s ultimatum
People on flights are willing to accommodate passengers, provided their requests are reasonable and not demands to begin with. One traveler who goes by u/ChicagoMensch shared a post on Thursday, October 22, 2026, explaining that they refused to move their bag from their seat after a woman demanded they do so because her husband had cancer. They didn’t have a problem with the request as much as they did with the way she ordered it. After much back and forth, a flight attendant assessed the situation and gave the wife an ultimatum.
The passenger had already been understanding once. Their originally booked flight turned out to be overbooked, so they accepted the cash and decided to take the next flight. When they boarded, they got a seat between an elderly couple. They put one bag in the overhead bin and kept the other under the seat in front of them. The woman immediately told them they had to move their luggage because her husband needed to stretch. “She never once asked. I told her no,” they confidently remarked. She got agitated and began crying and complaining. When she refused to budge, a flight attendant came over and told her she either had to calm down or would be removed.

Two things bothered the passenger, prompting them to say no. The first was that the woman didn’t request; she instructed. The second was that she wanted them to give up their space for her husband to stretch. Her partner, on the other hand, had no problem with the space he already had. He didn’t need another person’s legroom and was visibly embarrassed by his wife’s behavior. Yet, he chose not to say anything to her or to the traveler. Eventually, after the cabin crew warned her, she stopped.
After landing, several flyers who noticed what had happened assured the traveler that they had done nothing wrong. While no one is entitled to another passenger's seat or perks, making a polite request is always better than simply taking them. However, some passengers feel they can pull such stunts and end up bearing the brunt of their actions. In another instance, a woman shrewdly grabbed a stranger’s spot on a plane before they boarded.

When they arrived at their assigned spot and told her she was in their seat, she brushed it off, saying everyone was “mixed around” due to the chaos, and assured them that her assigned seat was an aisle seat too. Then they realized why she wanted their seat. She was supposed to sit near the restroom, where people were walking up and down, with a fairly “large” man in the middle seat. As soon as they saw that, they went back and asked her to return to her own seat.
