Woman was proudly talking about her handstand after a stranger praised her — then one man’s comment wiped the confidence from her face

Though the man had no harmful intentions, his words made the woman doubt how others viewed her workout.

Humor should bring people together, not make someone feel small or embarrassed. Fitness and nutrition coach Molly Galbraith shared a story about a gym interaction that made her think about how comments can affect someone's confidence. In an Instagram post shared under the handle @themollygalbraith on June 8, 2026, the co-founder of Girls Gone Strong, a fitness and wellness organization, explained that she noticed a woman performing an impressive handstand and went over to compliment her. What seemed like a simple and positive conversation later became uncomfortable when an unexpected remark from a man left the woman questioning herself.

The content creator explained that the woman had completed a perfect handstand, and after coming down, Galbraith told her how impressive it was. They started talking about training, including the woman's muscle-ups and other gym activities. During their conversation, a man who appeared to know her walked over and mentioned that he noticed she had made a friend. He then joked that she was “in here showing off with your handstands.” Galbraith replied that it was simply a skill the woman had developed and that she could not help that her handstands were great. The man repeated the joke, and while it seemed like teasing, the woman appeared slightly embarrassed by the comments.

The fitness coach noticed that the woman started doubting herself and wondering whether others viewed her workouts as a way to seek attention. Although Galbraith did not think the man had harmful intentions, she felt his words could make the woman think twice before showing her skills again. She explained that someone who works hard for their achievements should not feel the need to hide them. Her message was that “you have worked so hard to get this strong,” and that effort deserves to be respected.

The trainer later shared that confidence should not depend on how others react to a person's success. She encouraged anyone who has built a skill through dedication to keep enjoying their progress without feeling uncomfortable. She reminded her followers that “it is not your job to make yourself smaller so other people feel comfortable.” In the caption, she encouraged people to “keep taking up space” and keep their confidence strong.

Women belong in the gym as much as anyone else, and they deserve to train without judgment or unwanted commentary. In another incident, powerlifter Katie Salerni shared how she responded when a stranger at the gym questioned her workout technique. The man told her that she was performing her triceps push-downs incorrectly, despite her years of training and experience.

Instead of getting into a debate, she pointed out that her own results showed she knew what she was doing and reminded him that her triceps were larger than his. She later highlighted how confidence and knowledge matter, saying, “You could be the best in the world at something, and a man will still tell you that you’re doing it wrong.”
