58-year-old stylist apologized profusely after she couldn’t match man’s complex haircut in 2 hours — he tipped her over 30% for an unexpected reason
We expect great service when we walk in as customers, but this can go beyond receiving the perfect meal at a restaurant or getting the ideal look after a makeover. A man named Oliver Foit, who goes by @oliver.foit on Facebook, was reminded of this after an unusual encounter with a 58-year-old hairdresser. In a post shared on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, he revealed that he had walked into the salon with a reference picture of a complex cut, hoping to leave looking like a star. Instead, the hairdresser failed to get the cut right and was extremely apologetic about it. One factor from that interaction made him tip over 30%.
Foit showed the woman the picture, and she immediately got uneasy looking at it. As she got to work, the man asked how long she had been cutting hair. She replied, “5 months.” The worker explained that she had only recently started the job after changing careers. Halfway through the service, Foit knew the final style wouldn’t be what he expected. After two hours of cutting hair and heartwarming conversation, the cut was not what he had hoped for. She apologized profusely, but the customer told her, “Don’t worry about it, there’s only so much you can do.” Throughout the haircut, he saw determination in her eyes to do a good job, and he decided to reward her for her effort.
The reference picture featured a fade with a more complicated style, and the hairdresser was worried but took up the challenge. She was honest and had a transparent conversation with Foit throughout the process. He mentioned that even though she needed more practice with her skills, she was already great at interacting with customers. He felt her willingness to try something new and her resilience deserved a tip. He tipped over 30% because her determination inspired him to keep trying, just as she did. “It’s hard to learn something new. Don’t beat yourself up and be patient with people that are learning,” he said.
Viewers were equally impressed by the exchange. @mickey.parker.5 wrote, “You have a kindness that most people couldn’t comprehend.”@tamy.haweshalvorson shared, “I can't even imagine starting a hair career at that age. You are a rare breed of client.” @debbiemcnanny remarked, “I've been in her spot; thanks for giving her a chance.” It’s easy to tip when the service is perfect. However, it takes a lot of heart to recognize the good in other aspects of an experience and extend kindness because of them. In another instance, a couple mentioned that they received what most would call terrible service at a restaurant, yet they tipped $100.
They mentioned how they had to wait 20 minutes for water and 40 minutes for their appetizers. However, when they finished, they tipped $100 on a $66.65 meal because they looked beyond the poor service and realized the restaurant was short-staffed. One waiter was juggling 12 tables. He was overwhelmed but did his best and never once got annoyed. The couple was impressed with his focus and determination. They also recalled how they used to be servers and knew how demanding the job could be. That night, they tipped him for being resilient and continuing to try his best.
