Trigger Warning: This article contains themes of self-harm that some readers might find distressing.

An act of kindness that may be simple and insignificant to you can be life-saving for another. A man named Tom, who goes by @theheartrockguy on Instagram, learned this through a tear-jerking reality. In a video dated June 23, 2026, he explained that he went to a school for an assembly and handed each kid a heart-shaped rock. One 6-year-old student took that simple item home and did something with it that saved his dad. Over the years of giving out these little hearts, this boy’s story became a powerful inspiration.

Tom mentioned that he had done over 183 assemblies. The one at the school was just one of them. He spoke to the students and simply handed out a rock cut in the shape of a heart. A 6-year-old took it home and gave it to his dad. Later, Tom received a call, and he learned what unfolded. The boy’s parents were going through a separation, and his father was extremely upset. The kid handed him the heart, saying that on days he wouldn’t be there, the little rock would be a reminder that he still loved him. The man later revealed that he planned to end his life a few days later, but that rock became a reminder that he was not alone and that he was loved. It became his reason to stay.

The artist has given over 200,000 rocks, and he mentioned in his caption that he only asks one thing of the receivers — to keep it as long as they need, and when they don’t, to give it away to someone who needs it. Tom shared that the 6-year-old must have needed that little reminder, but he knew his parent could use it more. “The gift of his kindness, and of giving his heart away, was his dad,” he said. He added that there were 129 instances that he could think of where the rock helped save someone’s life. You don’t need to shell out hundreds of dollars to make an impact. Just look around and take one active step in love.

One dad did this and saved a life. He was driving with his three daughters and was already late when he saw a car parked on an overpass. From his mirror, he noticed a young man standing on a bridge, about to jump. He got off, asked his oldest to call first responders, and went to help the stranger. He first stretched out his arms and yelled, “I love you.” He moved to hug him and managed to grab him and pull him to safety. For the next few seconds, he hugged him and only said, “I love you,” repeatedly. The first responders arrived and attended to him. Later, the dad learned that the man’s name was Aron. He had a friend, Aron, who tragically ended his own life, and the coincidence brought reassurance in his grief.
