6 years after adopting a boy, couple got a call from his birth mom—what she revealed changed their lives

Many adoptive parents choose to remain in contact with birth parents for a stronger bond. The relationship that evolves out of this is special and one-of-a-kind. Joseph and Shanna Weight had adopted Milo, when he was a baby, per ABC News. Along with another son, Nash, the family has gone through five years of togetherness, love and belonging. Then, the parents were shocked to receive a life-changing call from Milo’s birth mom. The woman made an unexpected request that left the parents stunned. Milo’s birth mom was 18 years old when she gave birth to him in 2013.

"She was a young mom and she had grown up with a lot of siblings from a lot of different fathers. She never knew her dad, so she wanted her child to have something better than what she had,” Joseph revealed. That’s when the mom decided to put Milo up for adoption. When the Weights met the then-infant through an adoption agency, they fell in love with him. After being married for nine years, they were ready to become parents via adoption, and somehow Milo felt like the right fit. "Milo, he was kind of the perfect first child. He was our entire world. I can't explain what he's done for our lives,” she remarked.

Shanna loved the idea of being a mom after Milo and so she and Joseph welcomed their biological child, Nash, according to Inside Edition. Things were pretty planned out and perfect for the couple until they received a call from the birth mom via the adoption agency. “They contacted us and said, 'Milo is going to be a big brother,’” Joseph recalled. The birth mom was pregnant again and made an unexpected request to the Weights. “They asked if we would consider adopting his sister," the dad recounted. The couple was caught off guard. It was not something in the books for them.

"At the time I was like, 'That's a big one,’” Joseph said. Shanna added, "My first thought was, 'There's no way we can do this. We're not ready.’” The duo gave it some thought and then wondered what the pros could be. "After the initial shock wore off, I thought, 'It would be so nice to have them raised together,’” the adoptive mom said. It was time to ask the young man for whom things would change more than anyone else. "I [told Milo], 'Your birth mom is pregnant,' and he started jumping up and down. He pointed his finger right in my face and said, 'We're bringing home that baby,’” the dad recalled.

The Weights immediately knew they had to bring the infant home. Now, 3-month-old Onni has been nothing but a joyful addition to the family. As the couple pondered it all again, they were humbled to be chosen a second time by the birth mom. "I felt very grateful that she would give us the opportunity to also parent one of [Milo's] siblings," Shanna remarked. "I think how courageous [their birth mom] was to recognize that they needed something more than she could give them. She was very selfless in what she did,” she added. The family of five is delighted to be together and embark on their journey of a lifetime.
