Trigger Warning: This article contains themes of miscarriage that some readers may find distressing.

Loss of a child is a heartbreaking experience. When twenty-year-old Maisie Harkin (@maisharkinx) had a miscarriage, she was drowning in grief. In those devastating moments, nothing made her feel better, and she thought she'd never find joy again. When hope seemed lost and darkness seemed adamant, her boyfriend offered a simple suggestion. She initially refused, being distraught and empty. However, he surprised her with something, and it changed her life for the better. Reported by Newsweek on April 2, 2026, the woman revealed how an unexpected companion became a source of light during her dark period of life.

The England resident was heartbroken when she experienced a miscarriage. She strongly believed that nothing could fix her pain until her boyfriend made an unexpected suggestion. He recommended she get a puppy for herself, as he did not want to leave her alone when he went to work. At first, Harkin told him that a puppy wouldn't replace the loss that she experienced. "My heart was broken in a very specific way, and I couldn't see how bringing a new life into our home would help with that," she told the outlet. Nevertheless, she went to see a Labrador puppy, and it quickly shifted something in her. She noted how watching that little ball of fur made her feel like her "grief wasn't so heavy." In her clip, she finally shared a glimpse of her newly adopted Marleigh, and it changed her life for the better.

And as she mentioned, the comforting presence, the soft, warm touch, soothed more than she could imagine. As she navigated her personal grief, the furry pal became her reason to wake up. Although she does agree that her puppy cannot take her pain away, she believes that her experience of adopting the pup has helped her heal in unexpected ways. "It's also okay to resist help at first, or not recognize it when it's offered. Grief is deeply personal, and whatever you're feeling is valid," she noted. According to Today's Transitions,  dogs can recognize emotions in humans by combining information from different senses. Dr. Lori Polkowski, veterinarian, noted, "Animals can sense facial expressions, body language, tone of voice, and even changes in smell in humans during grief. This recognition prompts them to respond in a way that helps humans feel connected to them."

"Petting an animal can physiologically decrease the stress hormone cortisol, which increases during stressful times in our lives," the report noted. Soon after her video gained traction, many women stepped forward to share similar accounts of finding solace through a canine companion during grief. @Henry wrote, "The sad part is that dogs probably never fully know that they saved you. But that's also the beauty behind it. They don't have to know it. They love you unconditionally." @Lilfrog93 commented, "My sweet Hank. I rescued him just after he was in an abusive home. We healed each other." @izzy wrote, "Your boyfriend sounds wonderful. What a lovely life you three have."
