Asian-American doctor was deplaning when a stranger's 'Konnichiwa' joke stopped him in his tracks — his response left him even more furious
Comments rooted in stereotypes can make even the most ordinary public spaces feel unwelcoming. Instagram user and dermatologist, Dr. Michael Park, who goes by @dr.michaelpark, shared one such incident in a video posted on June 29, 2026. According to Park, he noticed a man standing near the aircraft door greeting passengers as they exited. Assuming he was an airline or airport employee, the traveler continued walking until the person directed what he described as a mocking, racially charged remark toward him. So, rather than ignoring the encounter, the creator confronted the individual, only for the conversation to raise an even bigger question.
The person had mocked him with a Japanese greeting, "Konnichiwa," despite him being Korean. He said the remark reduced his identity to a racial stereotype and was far more than an innocent mix-up. Park confronted him, telling him that it's not okay to make such comments about someone. When he asked whether he was an employee, the man revealed that he wasn't, and continued to harass other passengers. If the stranger truly was not an airline or airport worker, the doctor questioned why he had been standing at the gate greeting people, let alone making racially insensitive remarks. According to him, the situation presented two equally troubling possibilities: either the individual had lied about his role, or an unauthorized person was interacting with passengers.
Park also recalled that a United employee was standing just beside the man throughout the interaction. When he looked toward her after confronting the remark, she lowered her head and remained silent as the exchange unfolded. In a follow-up video, he shared that United later confirmed that it was not a worker from the airline or the airport. They even assured him that shortly after he left, the stranger had been flagged and escorted by the staff. While he acknowledged there was no way for him to verify this, he said he had little choice but to accept the explanation. Even so, the doctor argued it did not erase the fact that someone felt comfortable making a racist remark in a public space.
According to the Pew Research Center, 58% of Asian adults say they have experienced discrimination or unfair treatment because of their race or ethnicity. Among them, 53% said these experiences happen from time to time, while 5% reported facing them regularly. The findings highlight how casual remarks can contribute to a broader pattern of discrimination, even when they are dismissed as jokes. And challenging such behavior is often the first step toward creating public spaces where everyone feels equally welcome and valued. The viewers completely sided with the doctor. @hail_yeahhhh said, "I was there, and it was so bizarre! I'm not sure why this man was 'greeting' passengers, but the blatant racism was appalling." @bookwyrm commented, "Thank you for speaking up. As an Asian woman, random strangers have done this to me my entire life." @annikimchi also wrote, "Same thing happened to me. The flight attendant bowed and said, 'Arigato.'"
