Bartender mocked customers for ordering drinks she didn’t know how to make—only for their 30% tip to come with a twist she never expected
Service workers, like any employees, may have good and bad days. However, it is always important to be polite and avoid being rude to people who have done nothing but treat you with respect. A woman named Sophia Marie, who goes by @sophiaamarie, had paid a visit to an Italian restaurant in South Florida during happy hour with her cousin when she noticed the bartender mocking them for ordering a drink she didn't know how to make. But instead of calling the manager over her rude behavior, the duo left her a 30% tip, and the reason left everyone surprised. On September 28, 2025, Marie revealed how their selfless act taught the bartender a lesson.
When the duo went to the bartender and asked for a Bahama Mama, the bartender rudely asked, "What is that?" Since she was a bartender herself, Marie's cousin explained what the drink was, but the employee claimed they did not have the necessary ingredients. When she asked for a Tequila Sour, the worker asked if they wanted a margarita. After the customer explained what the difference was between the two drinks, the server turned toward a regular customer and whispered, "What the f**k are they talking about?" Marie remarked, "We were right there. She had the audacity to do that in front of us." However, after they dined, they decided to tip her 30%, and the reason was to "ruin her night" politely.
"When someone is miserable, nothing burns more than realizing the people you tried to embarrass still had the grace, the class, and the audacity to treat you better than you treated them," she explained. She also said that she wanted to give the bartender the benefit of the doubt that she was having a terrible day at work, though she did not think that justified her rude behavior. "Trust me, she will never forget that tip. We killed her with kindness," Marie added.
Viewers took to the comments section to share their experiences. @rreyanamonet wrote, "I've been a server for years, and I've had my days as well. When people overtip even when I know service was subpar, it does in fact make me feel bad." @Armenian Baby mentioned, "I've been bartending for 13 years, I promise you she will not remember nor care." Meanwhile, @noelle remarked, "As a coffee barista, if someone comes to my job just ordering drinks they only make at Starbucks, I'm going to say 'what is that.' Because you’re not at Starbucks."
While most bartenders are welcoming and professional, negative experiences can happen from time to time. In a similar story, a Threads user named Jill was strangely pressured by a bartender to drink alcohol, despite refusing multiple times. Since she needed to drive her friends home, she ordered cranberry with club soda, while the employee persuaded her to get vodka instead.
After feeling uncomfortable about the whole ordeal, she reported the worker to the club bouncer, who turned out to be an off-duty police officer. However, a month later, she learned that the same bar had been raided for allegedly exploiting women after intoxicating them. It all made more sense when she recalled the manager dismissing her concerns when she had reported the bartender and brushing off the experience by saying, "Oh, honey, he's just trying to help."
