Bride-to-be accepted $25,000 from mother-in-law for wedding — stunned by the catch she never saw coming
Conflicts between individuals and their in-laws are quite common, as both sides often try to assert their own perspectives, opinions, and advice based on their personal wants and choices. However, there are times when such disagreements can become more complicated. This is exactly what happened to one Reddit user (u/Defiant-Function839). On April 12, 2026, she shared a post that updated her previous post, where she mentioned growing differences with her mother-in-law. Meanwhile, her mother-in-law gave her and her fiancé a check for $25,000 to help with the wedding. While initially skeptical, she accepted the gift. But what she later discovered shocked her.

The user explained that she was unsure whether she was overreacting or being unnecessarily doubtful after her mother-in-law offered the couple a large check. However, when the couple explained that they would only accept the check if their own conditions and plans for the marriage were respected, the mother agreed to those terms and also offered an apology. They accepted her gift and began making bookings, but their planned 50-guest venue was suddenly unavailable. Suspicious, the bride-to-be’s mother later called the restaurant pretending to be a relative and discovered it had been booked by the mother-in-law to block them, forcing the couple to choose a larger venue.
“She booked it and paid a deposit to secure it so we couldn't have it. I can only imagine she did this to slowly convince us to book a larger venue and host a larger reception,” the poster wrote. The bride-to-be and her fiancé had already shared that, as introverts, they wanted a small wedding with just 50 close guests. They had also planned to book the same restaurant where they first met at a speed dating event, which perfectly matched their desired guest size. Although the mother-in-law initially accepted those terms, it later turned out that she was only pretending and was secretly plotting against their plans by reserving the place they wanted.
While she suspected her mother-in-law had a hidden motive in offering the money, so she could later influence decisions like the venue, dress, and more, the bride-to-be hadn’t anticipated she would go as far as creating a scheme to corner them into accepting her own terms. She also hired a wedding planner behind their back and told him that they had decided to increase the number of guests at the wedding from 50.
After she was exposed, the user’s fiancé called his mother, expressed his resentment, and made it clear she would have no role in the planning and would attend only as a regular guest. She was also warned that if she tried to interfere again, she would not be invited. “We transferred the money back to her account,” the bride-to-be mentioned. She told her fiancé she intended to go no-contact with her mother-in-law. Although she didn’t want her at the wedding, she planned to remain polite to avoid any drama, and afterward continue the no-contact. She also noted that her fiancé was “100% backing” her decision.
