Customers complained after waiting 45 minutes for their salad — the waitress’s blunt suggestion on what to do next left them stunned
When restaurant service falls behind, impatient customers often take their grievances to the server, who is usually expected to keep things from escalating. But when one table complained about waiting too long for their food, TikTok creator Kalina Isabella had a surprising response. The creator, who posts as @kalinaisabella, shared a video on Sunday, August 16, 2026, explaining how she acknowledged the diners' frustration before giving them advice she probably wasn't supposed to offer.
Isabella explained that the restaurant was packed with customers that night, with some waiting to be seated and others waiting a long time for their food. One table had already called her over several times, complaining that they had been waiting about 45 minutes for their salad. When the man told her they were considering leaving the outlet, the server surprised him by agreeing. She told him, "If I were you, that’s exactly what I would do," adding that if they were starving and had no idea when the food would arrive, they should just go elsewhere. When he asked about the drinks they had already ordered, she bluntly replied, “F*** the drinks,” and said she would have the manager comp them.
The customers took her advice. The man looked at his wife and said, “Honey, let’s go." Their departure actually gave the overwhelmed kitchen some breathing room. Isabella told the food runner that table 42 had left after waiting. He said their leaving "actually kind of helped" him a lot because the kitchen staff was struggling to keep up with the orders. Seeing that the tactic worked, the waitress asked whether any other diners were causing delays. The food runner pointed to another table that had been waiting about 30 minutes even though their food had not yet been started. Isabella responded, “I’m on it,” suggesting that she was ready to use the same approach to help clear the backlog.
Long waits at restaurants can be frustrating, and research backs this up. A 2018 study published in the Journal of Operations Management that analyzed more than 94,000 guests found that longer waiting times were linked to customers being more likely to leave, return less frequently, and shorten their dining time. That makes the diner's decision to walk out after waiting 45 minutes understandable, although in this case, the server herself encouraged them to leave because she knew the kitchen staff was overwhelmed. Internet users had mixed reactions to her strategy. @aries4513 warned, “You're going to get fired.” @ang3lbitezz admitted, “I used to do this all the time; sometimes they would slide me cash for being unexpectedly honest." @aydaescapades admitted, "I'd rather do that than get a horrendous online review."
