He offered to cover the bill on their first date — but what the waitress told her moments later made her block him

What made the situation even more frustrating was that the date had apparently not started off well in the first place.

Most people walk into a first date hoping for a connection, but sometimes the evening turns into an unexpected lesson about the other person instead. TikTok user Carrington, who goes by @onlycarrington, shared a similar experience on May 14, 2026, about a disastrous first date that ended with the woman blocking the man. The date was going somewhat fine until the bill arrived, and one tiny revelation from the waitress left her stunned.

In the video, Carrington explained that she had ordered herself two drinks while waiting for the man to arrive, and according to her, the rest of the date actually seemed to go fairly smoothly until the big shock arrived. The creator recalled that by the end of the meal, she briefly stepped away to use the restroom while assuming the bill had already been handled, especially because the man had previously said he was going to take care of it. However, once she returned to the table, the waitress handed Carrington the payment terminal for the drinks she had ordered before he arrived, while the man casually explained that he had only paid for his own portion of the date.

What made the situation even more frustrating was that the date had apparently not started off well in the first place. Carrington explained that they were supposed to meet around 7:45 or 8:00 p.m., but the man did not arrive until nearly 8:30, which was why she had already ordered herself two drinks while waiting alone at the restaurant. The incident painted a disappointing picture of modern dating, where even basic effort and consideration can feel increasingly rare. Experiences like these also end up lowering expectations over time, to the point where many people now view even the smallest acts of decency or planning as unusually impressive after too many disappointing dates.

The comment section had some interesting takes, but most sided with the woman. For example, @indeee6 said, "I would have asked him why he was still at the table cause I don’t need an audience to pay for my food," while @prisduke commented, "I wouldn’t have even still been there at 8:30 when he finally showed up." @kym.ka7 gave a possible explanation of why the man decided to act differently after initially planning to pay, saying, "He asked you on a date and just wasn't feeling you in person, that's all. That's why it's always good to take your own money and vehicle on the first date." @heyyfriennd wrote, "That wasn’t a date. That was dinner with a friend."

Carrington ultimately revealed that she blocked the man immediately after leaving the restaurant and deleted his contact information because she had no intention of ever seeing him again. For her, the issue was not necessarily about paying for two drinks, but the sudden switch in behavior after he had already implied he would handle the bill. The story also resonated with many viewers because it reflected a larger frustration surrounding modern dating, where small moments of inconsideration often end up revealing far more about compatibility and effort than grand romantic gestures ever could.
