That is what happened to a Reddit user, u/SquirrelNamedRex, when his dad sent an update on his mom's hip replacement. Sharing the incident on September 5, 2026, he said it caught him flat-footed when his father texted, "She passed." He took a second to let it sink in and started texting back. But what happened next made them "cry-laugh" over it.

The son shared that his mom had gone under hip replacement surgery, and his dad had been sending updates throughout, as the son lives far away from them. The surgery itself had gone fine, but a few minor complications meant she had to stay in the hospital overnight. She hadn’t passed the physio test she needed to be cleared to go home, so his dad continued sending updates, and the son waited for her to recover enough to leave. The next morning, he and his brother received a text from their dad saying, "She passed." According to the post, the son first "didn't look at it right away." As soon as he started texting back, his brother replied, "Mom is fine and passed her physio exam. She did not pass away." He couldn't help but burst into laughter at the misunderstanding his dad's text created.
The comical ordeal did not end there. After he got an update that his mom was cleared and on her way home, he decided to keep the joke going and gave a hilarious response: "Glad to hear she's going to a better place now." He decided that if his dad was going to choose the worst possible words accidentally, he might as well have some fun with it.
The comments showed that this kind of parental texting mishap is hardly a one-family phenomenon. Reddit user u/kat_Folland joked that the dad was “never going to live this down,” while u/Cold_Collection_6241 shared an even more unfortunate example, writing, "My dad sent out a death notice with lol at the end. Dads and texting can be a funny combination, especially when they have their own way of communicating.
