Four college students showered waitress with compliments all night — what happened after they split their $68 bill caught her off guard
Getting showered with compliments at work can feel great, but for one server, the praise didn't quite match the payoff. TikTok user Macy, who goes by @servingqueenmacy, thought she'd had a great table of four college students at LongHorn Steakhouse. Macy said the group had been a dream table at first. They were friendly, laughed with her, asked questions about the menu, and kept complimenting her service. They told her, "Oh my gosh, you're the best server I've ever had," which left her thinking she'd had a great shift. But when it came time to pay, their tip left her stunned. In a TikTok video posted on September 13, 2026, Macy shared why their gesture felt more insulting than their compliments were flattering.

The group shared three entrees and an appetizer, bringing the bill to around $68, and asked her to split it four ways. Each student paid separately by card, and Macy ran the transactions as usual. But when she went back to close everything out, she realized each person had tipped her just 30 cents, for a grand total of $1.20. She was caught off guard by what the group had left her after their generous praise. She said, "If you're going to tip me $1.20, don't also tell me I changed your whole night," frustrated that their words had amounted to almost nothing.

The tiny tip also worried Macy because it could affect her tip average for the shift. She said she'd been earning over 20% in tips before the encounter, but the students' $1.20 brought that average down. She summed up her frustration by commenting that "Compliments don't pay rent, but okay." Viewers had mixed reactions to the story. @halogenlightbulb sympathized with Macy, writing, "Compliment tipping pisses me off so bad. That is awful. I am so sorry." Meanwhile, @readingmama1234 suggested the students might have been short on money, commenting, "They were splitting entrees; I would assume they didn't have money." @user814028740 bluntly wrote, "You’re getting paid by the restaurant."

A disappointing tip can be particularly frustrating when a server believes they have provided excellent service to their customers. In another story, a server received just over $1 in tips after dealing with a customer who repeatedly complained about his mojito during a $118 birthday dinner. The server eventually returned the money, telling the customer, "I'm going to get you your dollar on 120; hold on." The customer was so upset that he asked to speak to a manager, who reportedly laughed at the complaint.
