Grandmom asked for remote access to a baby monitor to stay connected — one comment about breastfeeding cost her that privilege

When her husband brought it up, disappointed, she explained that she needed privacy in her own home.

Modern parenting often brings new challenges as technology becomes part of family life. A Reddit post shared on August 4, 2025, by a user (r/CharlotteDobreYouTube) described a situation where, as a new mother, she felt her privacy was slowly disappearing. It started when the mother-in-law asked for remote access to a baby monitor to stay connected with her grandchild, but her one comment about breastfeeding later changed everything and led to her losing that access. The mother explained that what seemed like a simple way to keep family close slowly became uncomfortable and concerning.

The 32-year-old said she had a three-month-old baby with her husband. Her mother-in-law lived across the country and wanted to view the baby through a connected camera system. The couple agreed, thinking it would help her feel involved from a distance. Over time, however, the new mom began receiving odd comments. One moment that stood out was when she was breastfeeding in the nursery and, later, her husband received a message about her clothing, saying, “I’d be happy to send her a nicer robe.” That comment made her feel exposed in a private moment. "I was so creeped out. I mean, that was clearly during a private moment, not just the baby napping."

As the situation continued, she noticed more remarks that felt like quiet judgment rather than support. When the baby cried for a while, she received messages like “Poor little guy, someone must be tired today,” which made her feel observed and corrected at the same time. She also added that it felt like, “I would’ve picked him up sooner,” energy was being implied in the comments. This constant feedback made her feel like she was being monitored instead of simply trusted as a parent in her own home.

She later described how the situation affected her sense of control in her own space. Even small moments started to feel like they were being reviewed, which added pressure during already tiring days. Over time, she realized that what was meant to be a connection had turned into unwanted oversight. "She always acts like she’s trying to 'help,' but it’s in a way that makes me feel like I’m constantly being watched and judged."

In the end, she quietly changed the camera settings so the grandmother could no longer access the live feed. When her husband brought it up, disappointed, she explained that she needed privacy in her own home. She felt strongly that staying connected should not come at the cost of feeling constantly watched or judged in everyday parenting moments. "I just don’t want someone literally across the country watching me breastfeed and make comments on my clothes and parenting."

Many internet users also sided with her reasoning in the comment section. u/Dry_Prompt3182 wrote, "Revoke baby monitor privileges immediately, and arrange the dad and baby to have video calls instead." u/Vox_Mortem exclaimed, "That's invasive and creepy. I would feel incredibly violated if someone were always watching and making comments like that." u/ObligationNo2288 commented, "This is your home. Not hers."
