Her dating app match bought her a brand-new iPhone before their first date—then the phone started revealing things he never told her
Dating stories keep getting more and more bizarre each day. An Instagram user named Lula revealed how everything was going well with a man she matched with on a dating app. He went as far as getting her an iPhone when he learned hers had broken. In a post shared under her handle @lulaindee on May 16, 2026, she revealed what the catch was, and it was deeply unsettling. Needless to say, the first meeting also became the last.
Lula recalled matching with a man on a dating app, who seemed great. Within the first week of interaction, they decided to meet. Before that, during a conversation, she casually mentioned how her day wasn't going well because her phone had fallen and broken. Like a gentleman, he informed her that he had purchased a new iPhone for her and asked her to pick it up from the store. Soon after their first meeting, she began seeing “people you may know” suggestions on the very same device. That's when she discovered his business page, learned he had used a fake name to speak to her, and found out he was also newly married.
The strangest part was that he had just gotten back from his honeymoon and was already cheating. Lula confronted him, and eventually, his wife learned that he was on a dating app. The irony is that the device he brought for her ended up helping expose him. The iPhone purchase earned him brownie points, but not for long.
A man gifting expensive presents can seem thoughtful, but in this case, it turned out to be part of his façade. According to the Institute for Family Studies, young, single people are steering clear of dating apps due to such deceptions. The report showed that 11% of married adults under the age of 40 are actively using these platforms. It was also noted that husbands are more likely to use them compared to wives.
What’s concerning is that even young, married adults who are parents also make up a portion of users. However, the study suggested that motivations vary. While unmarried people use dating apps to find romantic connections, some married users reportedly seek “casual dates.” The most common reason given by the latter group was to find friends. Yet, data showed that married people are also looking for “romantic relationships” and “hookups.” This may have been what Lula’s date had in mind since he never disclosed that he was married while continuing the interaction with romantic intent.
The woman added to the irony by keeping the phone and using it to create a video that she shared with thousands of people to raise awareness. She urged the internet to be careful when using dating apps. Commenters were shocked while also expressing support for the wife. @chantellelovesgreen wrote, “That poor wife, I’m grateful she knows.” @lola_bella33 remarked, “The married ones go above and beyond.” @consulellalatanjaa added, “At least you left with something. A win is a win!”
