Lawyer was confused when a double security alert triggered during an airport scan — the culprit was a beauty product she swore off while flying
Airport security can make a normal journey stressful when a routine scan suddenly leads to extra checks. Lawyer and content creator Georgina Cook found herself in that situation while traveling with only hand luggage. Her bag was pulled aside after the scanner raised an alert and staff began asking questions. A second check added to her worry as she knew she had done nothing wrong. The experience became even more surprising when she later learned what had caused the alerts. Georgina shared the incident on Instagram later under @awomancalledgeorge on September 5, 2026, explaining how an ordinary morning at the airport became far more dramatic than she expected.
Georgina said she was still trying to understand the first alert when staff carried out another check on her belongings. It was only later that she discovered the unexpected cause: the hand cream and body lotion she had used that morning. She had covered herself in lotion after her shower before heading to the airport. She learned that glycerin, an ingredient found in some of these products, can trigger airport security systems. Her bag was taken aside, and staff also swabbed her hands as part of the screening, causing another alert and making the situation even more worrying.
The checks became much more detailed after the alerts. Georgina said she had to undergo a full-body search, while staff removed the contents of her hand luggage and tested many of the items. She admitted that even after knowing she had done nothing wrong, the seriousness of the situation made her feel uneasy. As a lawyer, she knew there was no reason to be concerned, yet she felt uncomfortable standing there. "It's terrible, isn't it? When you know you haven't got anything, you still feel guilty," she added.
Once the checks were complete, the content creator was able to continue through the airport and treated the experience as a lesson for future trips. She said she was not blaming security staff and understood why strong screening systems were needed. However, she wished she had known that something as simple as body lotion could cause such scrutiny. She also joked that the incident ruined her plans to show off her outfit after getting her hair ready that morning. Her main advice was simple: avoid applying hand cream or body lotion immediately before airport security.

An officer wanted to inspect her hair for something that could be dangerous, leaving her confused about why the extra search was needed. She said the check happened near a crowded line, which made the moment even more embarrassing. The traveler questioned why the scanner had not raised any concern if something was actually hidden. “What could I possibly hide in my hair that couldn't be detected by the machine?” she asked. She later said the experience felt like “a punch to my mental and self.”
