Respecting boundaries is crucial when conversing with strangers; however, some cross those limits with their very first question. New York-based creator Tenicka recounted an experience on TikTok, under her handle @tenickab, on September 15, 2026, revealing what she encountered on a Delta flight after being upgraded to business class. Sitting in 1A, she noticed the man beside her looking her up and down before asking, “What do you do for work?” Instead of giving him a straight answer, she decided to play along with his assumption.

She flipped the question back on him, asking if he worked for Delta. When he denied it, she told him it was her first time flying commercial. She leaned into the bit, saying she was used to private flights, where only the staff spoke to her, and acted confused when he explained that he was her seatmate. She even asked him to put her bag away, joking that she had assumed the women on the flight were there to assist her. By then, she said, he was completely dumbfounded. “I talked to the rich mom quick,” she joked. She took the joke further, playing up how unfamiliar commercial flying was to her.
This conversation could have turned uncomfortable for Tenicka, but she smartly flipped the question, leaving the man confused with her sarcastic reply. Research has also looked at women using humor and sarcasm to push back against dismissive behavior from men. In a University of South Florida psychology study, researcher Rebecca A. Upton had 492 participants watch TikTok videos of a woman confronting a disrespectful man, with some seeing a sarcastic, mocking response and others seeing a less sarcastic one. The study found that women responded more positively to women calling out inappropriate attitudes and were more likely to find the sarcastic responses funny. However, the humor did not appear to make viewers more likely to change their views.
A conversation with a stranger can flow smoothly when boundaries are respected, and judgment is set aside. In another incident, a Mexican woman was working out at a gym when a German man heard her speaking Spanish and asked where she was from. When she said Mexico, he told her she couldn't possibly be Mexican because she was too pretty, claiming that “Mexicans are all ugly.” He insisted he meant it as a compliment. However, the woman sarcastically responded to his question. She told him, "Well, you don't look German because you're short." When he took offense, she used his reaction to point out the problem with his stereotype.
