Trigger warning: This story contains themes of abuse that some readers may find distressing.

When faced with dangerous situations, the first thing to do is not panic and act wisely. Estero bar manager Tatiana Franklin did just that when a 29-year-old man walked into her bar with bloody hands, as reported by Gulf Coast News on April 15, 2026. As soon as she saw Tyler Martin, she knew something was seriously wrong. Yet she engaged him in conversation as if he were just another regular customer, only to be horrified by his confession. She responded by acting strategically, and it made all the difference in averting disaster.

Franklin recalled what she learned after she approached the young man. Martin confessed that he had hurt his grandma. The Lee County Sheriff's Office had received a call about domestic violence. When they arrived, they saw that the person had severe head trauma. After assaulting his grandmother, Martin rode his bike to the bar. The manager knew she had to handle the situation with caution. Instead of panicking, she asked, “You hurt your grandma? Is she okay? Does she need help? Is anybody with her?” She continued engaging calmly while calling 911.

Around two hours after the domestic violence call, deputies learned that Martin was at the bar, thanks to the manager. They arrived, took him into custody, and charged him with aggravated battery causing bodily harm. Looking back, Franklin said she chose that approach because she had no idea how dangerous the suspect was.

She explained that there was no way of knowing whether he had any weapons or whether he might become violent inside the bar. She didn’t want to put the customers and employees at risk, so she proceeded carefully. The 29-year-old reportedly has a history of violent offenses. Since the incident, Franklin has urged others to stay alert. “If you see something, say something, always," she remarked.

A server's job may center on hospitality, but their awareness can sometimes make a life-changing difference. In another instance, a server managed to save a life through her observation and quick response. Flaviane Pimenta Carvalho, a waitress at Mrs. Potato Restaurant in Florida, noticed that a teenager dining with his family seemed distressed. His family wouldn’t let him eat anything, and when she asked about it, they told her he would eat at home. She also noticed that the boy had a scratch on his elbow. As a mother of a teenager herself, she felt something was wrong

“I thought I needed to do something. I could not see him go away without any help,” she remarked. Carvalho then slipped the boy a note asking if he was okay. When he indicated that he was not, she sent another four-word message — “Do you need help?” As soon as the teen said yes, she informed her manager and called 911. The investigation later revealed that the boy had been tortured and was 20 pounds underweight. The parents were held accountable for child abuse and negligence. “What this child had gone through was torture. I’m a mother, and seeing what that 11-year-old had to go through…It shocks your soul,” she said.
