Mother was flying business class with her crying baby when a passenger yelled 'shut up' — what the woman said next left her deeply hurt
Flying with a baby can be stressful for some if the baby gets cranky midway. The fear of your child having a meltdown, passengers judging you, or simply not knowing how people around you will react can keep circling in your mind. All a mother expects in that moment is a little kindness. But for Charlotte Freeman, an Instagram creator, her flight with her baby became even more stressful when another passenger shouted at her. She shared the experience on her account @charlotteheinrich on August 4, 2026, and it was later covered by the New York Post. During her flight home to Singapore, a fellow passenger confronted her about the crying. What the woman said about mothers flying business class left Charlotte with plenty to say.
The situation got uncomfortable when Freddie, her one-year-old son, started crying on the flight home to Singapore. Another passenger suddenly shouted, "Shut up," before standing up and staring Charlotte down. When Charlotte asked if everything was okay, the woman replied, "No, your baby has been crying," adding, "And I’m in business class." Caught off guard, Charlotte told her that she clearly didn't have children; otherwise, she would understand how difficult flying with a baby can be. But the woman replied that she had five kids of her own, leaving Charlotte even more upset. She said three things about the encounter that really bothered her: the lack of empathy from another mother, the woman's repeated emphasis on being in business class, and the fact that she chose to confront a mother who was already struggling with an upset baby.
The confrontation was even more unsettling because it happened suddenly in the middle of the night, with no crew member nearby. Charlotte said, "No one stepped in," to the outlet when asked if any crew helped her. What made the incident stranger was that there had been no tension when they boarded. Charlotte said another passenger had even been friendly and showed her pictures of his grandchildren. She also pointed out that Freddie had been much more unsettled on the flight to Singapore, where he cried for much of the journey, yet everyone remained considerate. "It shows how differently people can respond to the same situation," she said in conversation with the outlet.
Many viewers in the comments also supported her. @vdhair commented, "Yuck!!! I don’t believe any mother would speak to another mother like this in this scenario. Sorry this happened to you babe," while @yasminetanres wrote, "Mums should be in first class. We’re already dealing with a lot." @emmavosti added, "Instead of yelling, she should have poured you a champagne and told you you’re doing a good job."
Flying with a baby can already make parents anxious about how other passengers will react. Previously, a mother's 8-month-old started crying during a flight, leaving her so worried about disturbing everyone around her that she covered his mouth. But instead of judging her, a fellow passenger reassured the overwhelmed mom that it was okay to let her baby cry, giving her some much-needed comfort in an already stressful moment. Charlotte needed similar support during her flight, but the woman lacked empathy.
