Older woman put her hand on his pregnant wife’s belly without permission and asked about the due date — her quick-witted response made her walk away
People occasionally act without considering where the line should be drawn. One such moment was shared by a Reddit user under the username u/macmoreno on September 2, 2025. He described an incident while shopping with his pregnant wife, when an older stranger approached them in a grocery store. Without consent, the woman placed her hand on his wife’s belly and asked about her due date. The encounter quickly became awkward, but the wife's response put an end to their conversation.
The soon-to-be father shared how the couple was minding their own business when this "random woman in the produce section" swooped in. Feeling entitled to ask personal questions, the stranger inquired about the due date and invaded her privacy. The wife’s response then caught the woman off guard. She calmly said, “I’m not. I’m just fat. Thanks for that.” Her reply was direct and unexpected, leaving the stranger stunned and unsure how to react. The husband noted that the woman’s face “went white immediately,” and she quietly walked away without saying anything further.
"She froze. She didn’t apologize. She didn’t say another word," he wrote in the post. The husband later shared that this happened when they were expecting their first child, which made the moment even more personal. He also mentioned that his wife is quite tall, about 5'10," adding context to how the situation may have been misjudged. Reflecting on it, he joked, “I’m over there by the bananas laughing like an idiot,” showing how the uncomfortable moment quickly turned into something almost humorous for him.
It also highlights how assumptions about others can easily lead to uncomfortable situations. Experiences like this remind us that respect and awareness matter in public spaces. The husband even added that if someone is bold enough to act that way, they should be ready for the response that follows. In this case, the couple moved on quickly, but the moment likely stayed with the stranger.
One is bound to encounter a rude stranger now and then, and that is exactly what one mother experienced, but she made sure to silently put the person back in their place. Melanie Dudley was breastfeeding her baby while on vacation when someone nearby told her to “cover up.” The moment was unexpected, especially since she was already trying to manage in a public setting. Melanie later shared that she usually tries to be discreet, but that day the heat made it difficult. She explained, “I did have the cover on, but it was so hot. It was like, 95 degrees, and my little baby was sweating.”
Trying to stay comfortable, she took her shirt off and continued feeding her child. However, the comment caught her off guard, leaving her unsure how to respond at first. Instead of arguing, she reacted in a clever way. She took the cover and placed it over her own head, saying, “I just put it over my head. I don't know why. It wasn't like a salacious fight or anything. That was just my response. I had no words, so I thought, I'll just cover my head instead.” Her response made a point without creating a scene.
