Orthodontist privately spoke to a 15-year-old after her mom accused him of ruining her face with braces — his words stayed with her forever
Medical treatments and procedures, especially those involving facial surgery or dental alignment with braces, can be effective but may slightly alter a person’s facial structure. A Reddit user (u/xteta) shared a post on Monday, May 11, 2026, about a similar experience, from the time she was 15 years old and had her braces removed. When she returned home, her mother became furious and immediately took her back to the orthodontist’s office. She accused the doctors of leaving her daughter’s face with several flaws and demanded that they fix them. Amid the tense situation, the orthodontist asked to speak with the teenage girl privately, and what she told her stayed with her for a long time.
The doctors initially struggled to understand the mother’s concerns and showed her before-and-after photos for comparison. However, she quickly began pointing out minor flaws, claiming even that her daughter’s chin looked too pronounced, making her appear “like a witch.” The doctors explained that those details were likely genetic and not caused by the braces, but the mother refused to listen. She insisted that the treatment had damaged her daughter’s appearance and demanded that they continue working on it until they corrected their mistake. Soon after, one of the orthodontists asked to speak with the daughter privately outside the office. "She told me that I was beautiful and not to let my mom's words affect me," the woman recalled.
Eventually, the daughter refused her mother's idea to continue her treatment. Her mother gave her a sharp look and said, “Fine, but don’t blame me when you’re older.” Over the years, the mom kept pointing out the flaws in her features. She even shared a blunt piece of advice — not to show the left side of her face, especially to any boy she might like. The critical comments about her appearance made her hyper-aware of herself. “It has deeply affected my life to the point where I was too scared to date anyone until my early twenties because I felt so ugly and didn't want to face the rejection,” she wrote.
Even when someone compliments her, she finds it hard to believe that she is beautiful. She also shared that she has been diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), a mental health condition that affects how people perceive themselves and relate to others, according to the Mayo Clinic. The girl was too young at 15 to fully understand the orthodontist’s words, but in hindsight, she now sees it as a genuine act of kindness, especially given her mother’s critical comments about her appearance. Looking back, she is grateful for that one statement that served as a light when everyone around seemed to be judgmental and cruel.
