Partially deaf woman struggled to afford new hearing aids — until her coworker went behind her back to surprise her in a way she’d never forget
Hearing difficulties can make everyday conversations challenging, while the cost of hearing aids can add another worry for those who need them. For content creator and ED technician Janice Garcia, getting a new pair seemed difficult during a period when she was trying to rebuild her life. Born with partial hearing loss in both ears, she had relied on hearing aids since childhood. However, financial struggles left her with limited options. On October 16, 2026, a video shared on Instagram under the handle @janicegarciia went viral, bringing attention to a heartfelt moment involving her coworkers from seven years earlier that she would never forget.
At the time, Garcia had been sober for a little over a year and was working to recover from debts linked to her past drinking and partying. She worked at a restaurant where several employees were also in recovery, and they had formed a close bond while supporting one another. When a coworker learned she could not afford new hearing aids, they quietly arranged something special. During a gathering in the restaurant's kitchen, one colleague explained that Garcia was an important part of their workplace family and said, "You go out of your way to help everyone." He then revealed that the team had secretly collected $800 to help her pay for the hearing aids. Garcia was overwhelmed and cried as her coworkers celebrated the gesture together.

Looking back, Garcia said she had been "speechless" when she learned what her coworkers had done. She shared in another video how her insurance offered little help, so the money allowed her to travel from San Diego to the Bay Area, where an audiologist could help her obtain hearing aids at an affordable price. Garcia said she still keeps a card signed by her coworkers because reading their messages reminds her of their voices. The hearing aids eventually began to wear out, and as she considered replacing them, she felt both sad and grateful. She described the feeling as "bittersweet" because the old pair carried so many memories.

The content creator also shared how much her life had changed since that day. She had continued her sobriety journey and was approaching nine years sober in December. She now works in a hospital emergency room as an EMT, a job she said she deeply enjoys. Her coworkers continue to make her feel supported, reminding her of the family she found at work years ago.
If you're lucky, you'll find a good group of coworkers around you. In another story, a woman named Kat Kolkmann was grateful for a colleague's help when she got her period at work and had no pads. While her female coworkers had none to offer, a male colleague stepped in with two pads from his car. He even hid them in a pastry bag, leaving her touched by his thoughtful gesture. She called him an "evolved king." His small act of kindness helped her get through an otherwise difficult workday.
