A simple no should be enough to end a conversation, encounter, or any action. Respecting consent without demanding an explanation is basic decency. One mom named Megan Elisabeth, who goes by @meg_in_space26 on Threads, tried to politely refuse when a man asked to join her at her table at a restaurant. In her post shared on Sunday, October 11, 2026, she mentioned that it was the first day of her maternity leave and that she was enjoying a solo meal. Despite other vacant tables being available, a stranger insisted on sitting beside her. When she declined, he responded rudely.
The pregnant woman wanted to enjoy a solo brunch and was about to start reading her book when a man pulled up a chair and sat beside her. He then asked if he could join her, and since it was her first solo outing in two years, she refused. Instead of walking away, the man made a face at her as if she had demanded something impossible of him. “Oh! So you’d rather be alone, you don’t want to think about anyone else?” he said to her before angrily getting up and walking away. Elisabeth was confused because she couldn’t understand why wanting her own space was so offensive to a stranger.
She mentioned that she didn’t want to make small talk and was eager to spend time by herself with her book, and didn’t want to take a chance on interacting with strangers. She didn’t need a reason to decline; the man should have respected her simple no and moved on.
