Selecting and picking one name for a child is a crucial task. It involves pressure from family and loved ones along with the partner’s expectations and personal preferences. There are so many factors that are reviewed before finalizing a name. While sources and suggestions are always welcome, the decision is ultimately up to the parents to choose who should name their baby and what the name should be. u/Possible-Deer1715 shared an argument she had with her boyfriend’s mother regarding the name of her baby. The woman mentioned that the mom insisted she name the child with a name she had previously picked for her unborn child. However, the pregnant woman refused to change her mind and made a firm decision.

The post revealed that the couple knew their baby was going to be a girl but didn’t want to disclose it to anyone else. However, the mom had made a mention that she’d always wanted a granddaughter as she already had grandsons. On discussing the pregnancy and the topic of names, the mom insisted she know the gender of the child to be born so she could help choose names. “We explained to her that we were to decide the names, and it was our decision only,” the woman said. The couple had also decided that if the baby was a boy, they’d have his middle name “Scott,” after the woman’s father. He had passed away from cancer when the woman was 13 and the couple found it to be a nice way to honor him.

The mom was disheartened at this revelation. “My future mother-in-law stated that if I ‘get to name the damn baby after him, then the girl's name should be McKenna,’” the post mentioned. Sharing a little background, it was revealed, “My boyfriend's mother was pregnant around 18 years ago and lost the baby during childbirth. The baby would’ve been a girl and she was going to be named McKenna.” The woman sympathized with the mom but refused to take the suggested name for her kid. “I dislike the name, no offense, and my boyfriend had no connection with the baby. He was too young to know what happened,” she explained. She also noted that her boyfriend hadn’t made a mention of wanting any family members’ names as part of their child's.

The mom was frustrated and titled the woman “rude and selfish” for only choosing to honor her dad and not the other side of the family. “My boyfriend insisted that the idea was ridiculous. I was very close with my father. He was sick for years and I even had to watch him die, so naming a son after him would be him living on,” the woman explained. After a long argument, the woman remained firm in her opinion and refused to take the suggested name the mom picked. Several people supported the woman in her decision. Many pointed out it was harsh of the mom to title the baby as a random item and hook her unborn child’s name for her. u/seriousrikk wrote, “Simple version, your child, so you pick a name that means something to you.” u/Jacksonlove3 added, “The mom needs to be reminded that this is not her child! She has no entitlement to the baby girl or any of the decisions either.”
