Rude customer placed her order without acknowledging the waitress — then left a $60 tip on a $7 bill for a reason no one expected
Misunderstandings and unintentional errors are inevitable on certain days. While this can be disappointing, how we choose to react to these situations makes all the difference. An Instagram user named Yolanda Cuba, who goes by @yolanda.cuba, shared a post on March 29, 2026, about one such experience. As reported by Timeout on April 8, 2026, the woman was getting breakfast at Tasha's Cafe in Johannesburg when she ended up learning an important life lesson. She was engrossed in her own world with her phone as the waitress took her order and served her. When her $7.3 bill (R121) arrived, she decided to leave a $60 (R1,000) tip for a heartwarming reason.
Cuba arrived at the cafe for a quick bite on a busy day. The server came to take her order, and without even looking up, she quickly asked for a few breakfast items. The waitress stood silently and waited patiently for her to finish. After a couple of quiet moments, the customer finally looked up. The worker wasn’t angry. Instead, she smiled. Cuba immediately realized what she had done. “I had been rude. I hadn’t acknowledged her. Not as a person. Not even with basic respect,” she mentioned. She later apologized and decided to leave her a $60 tip while paying the bill. “I paid much more and thanked her. Not just for the service, but for the lesson,” she remarked.
In all the hustle, she didn’t even realize she was ignoring the waitress. And that error made her feel guilty because she, too, was once a server. “I know what it feels like to be unseen. To serve, and not be acknowledged. To be spoken to, but not really seen,” she noted. Cuba had always made it a point to treat people with respect, but that day, in the chaos, it slipped her mind. So she hoped the apology and extra dollars would make up for her mistake, and it did. The worker ran out to her to let her know she had prayed that she would make enough to afford rent that day. “It was her answered prayer. This was not a tip—it was the universe balancing the ledger,” Cuba said.
We’ve likely been in the same boat — so caught up in the tasks that we forget to live in the present and acknowledge the people who help our day run smoothly. It could be our service workers, our family, or even a helpful stranger. But gratitude can work wonders, and it doesn’t have to be monetary. In another instance, a server was waiting on a family of three at a restaurant. The couple left a generous tip, but what the boy did to thank the worker melted their heart. The child left three of his crayons as his tip for the waiter. He also left a message that read, "Thank you for being nice to my mom and dad." Delighted by the sweet gesture, the worker admitted, “I kept that napkin. Still have it in my server book. Not every good tip is cash, I guess.”
