Server patiently explained ‘gratuity’ to a difficult diner at the end of a $148 meal — what he saw written on the receipt next left him stunned
Working in a restaurant means dealing with all kinds of customers, but some tables can test a server's patience from the moment they sit down. A TikTok creator, Andrew Lopez, who goes by @rawcritix, shared one such experience on September 11, 2026, after a demanding customer kept asking him for help with even the simplest things. But when it was finally time to pay the $148 bill, the customer asked Andrew what "gratuity" meant, and what he did next left the server stunned.
The trouble started almost as soon as the server reached the table. The customer interrupted him to order two strawberry lemonades and asked for hot water to clean the silverware, then asked him to explain the appetizers even though the menu was open to that exact section. Things got even more frustrating when the man ordered his steak before his date was ready, then complained when her Alfredo came out first. But after Andrew handled their extra sauces, silverware, and drinks and helped them pay the $148 bill, the customer asked what "gratuity" meant. When Andrew explained that it was a tip, the man calmly said, "Okay, well, I’m going to give you zero."
The creator said he had gone out of his way to help the couple throughout the meal, even bringing extra sauces, silverware, and a cup for the man's leftover strawberry lemonade. So hearing that he was getting a $0 tip after all that was a shock. But the situation got even more ridiculous after the couple left. About five to 10 minutes later, the man came back into the restaurant and asked if the server had seen his key at the booth.
He couldn't believe it. After telling the server that he was leaving a zero-dollar tip, the man returned and expected him to stop what he was doing during the dinner rush to help find a lost key. Instead, the creator told him that if the key was at the booth, it was probably there and went back to his work. The creator said experiences like this are why serving can be so difficult. After spending the entire meal dealing with the customer's demands, he had hoped for at least a small tip. Instead, he was told directly that he was getting nothing. People in the comments were also equally frustrated by how the couple had treated him. @thecrimedoc wrote, "I can describe this couple 100% accurately." @christian.barrale4 said, "I mentally prepare when I see those couples." And @tekajett71 joked, "I hope the key was in the garbage."
Servers often have to deal with customers who turn small complaints into much bigger problems. In another story, a server dealt with a customer who kept complaining about a mojito that arrived without a salt rim, even after being offered a chance to have it fixed. The $118.93 bill ended with the customer leaving just over a dollar as a tip, but the server returned the money, saying they didn't want to accept it. When the customer demanded a manager, the manager reportedly laughed at the situation.
