The item was a simple box of rice pilaf, one of the last groceries Jonathan bought before he died from cancer in February 2020 at the age of 26. During the move into their home in October 2024, Gregory carefully wrapped the box in bubble wrap so it would not get damaged. Alyssa said, "He understands that a box of rice pilaf is important to me." She explained that the food itself was never the reason she kept it. Instead, it reminded her of quiet evenings she spent with her late husband, cooking dinner together, choosing a show to watch, and talking about weekend plans before illness changed their lives.
Alyssa also shared that Jonathan had been a middle school science teacher who was remembered for his kindness and the positive impact he had on his students and others. She described him as "an incredible man," adding that he loved science, video games, pizza, and cheering for his favorite sports teams. Through the years, she kept meaningful belongings that reminded her of him, but the rice box remained untouched in her pantry because it represented a normal day they never got to have again. When the woman met Gregory through Bumble in 2021, she told him early in their relationship about the life she had shared with her late partner and the loss that continued to shape her journey.
The man listened without judgment and responded with kindness instead of hesitation. He told her, "No one should ever expect you to stop loving [Jonathan]." The duo has since continued creating new memories together while keeping space for the loved ones they have lost. Before his death, Jonathan asked her to "Be Happy," a message she later turned into a tattoo as a reminder. She now feels that honoring his memory also means allowing herself to experience joy and move forward.
