The worst part of a bad date isn’t always the awkward small talk. It’s realizing the person across the table has become the exact kind of person you warned them about. Reddit user u/hangry-bean shared a similar experience on r/GirlDinnerDiaries on September 6, 2026, after going on a first date with a man she had been talking to for a month on Hinge. What started as a nervous first meeting quickly took a turn when he began asking questions that she didn't like. Her first date in years quickly turned into the worst date of her life. By the end of it, she was left fighting back tears.

According to her post, things took a turn when the man started asking personal questions, beginning with her past relationships. She declined, explaining that she doesn’t discuss that on a first date, but he told her she only had a limited number of “skips.” Later, when he asked about her biggest “icks,” she said she hated when men assumed they knew more than women and talked down to them. That was when he said, “I’m going to quiz you,” and began questioning her about finances and investments. When she revealed that she already owned a home, he seemed shocked. “No, I don’t have a first-time homebuyer account because I own a house,” she told him. He then started making assumptions about how she managed her money, leaving her frustrated.

The situation became so uncomfortable that she told him his comments were degrading and exactly the kind of behavior she had just said she couldn’t stand. She sat quietly, looking down at her glasses and fighting back tears, while considering whether to leave. Earlier, the date had already been awkward, with him arriving late and repeatedly jumping up to avoid a wasp around their table. She initially tried to brush it off because he said he was mildly allergic to stings.

The date hit even harder because she had heard similar comments from men since buying her home. She had spent seven years saving and put more than 50% down by herself, yet contractors, a neighbor, and even friends had questioned her decision. “It’s been hard to hear. Even though I know I’m good,” she wrote. Still, she decided not to walk out. Since he had talked about his own mental health, she didn’t want to make him feel worse, so she stayed until the date ended. She hugged him, said it was nice meeting him, then returned to her car and unmatched him. “I just can’t believe that I was drilled about this,” she wrote.

Then came one final bit of bad luck: she found bird droppings on her driver-side door handle. In an edit, she thanked Reddit users for their support and said she was taking a break from dating, instead planning a trip to the Rocky Mountains. “No more dates for this girl for a while,” she wrote. “Just vibes and nature.”

The post also drew supportive comments. u/GoldenVibz85 told her she had “dodged a bullet,” while u/Book_junky0809 said, "You handled that a lot better than I would have. Sorry about your terrible luck. That guy was definitely a douche canoe." Meanwhile, u/Fun_Yak82 praised her, saying, "Good for you, establishing boundaries. He sounds immature and pretentious. Your dinner looks fab!"

A first date may not always go as expected; instead, it can reveal a lot about the other person that you may not like. In another dating story, a woman became uncomfortable after a man explained that he preferred a “submissive woman” and expected his partner to follow his lead. She called him out and asked if he was looking for someone without a personality. He had nothing to answer, and she ended the date, much like this woman decided to do after realizing the man she met did not respect her boundaries.
