When it comes to dates, the little details are usually a big deal. Whether it’s getting flowers, cooking the meal, or even holding the door, it’s not just the act but also the thought that counts. A woman who goes by u/Aromatic_Turnover551 shared a post on Reddit on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, explaining how she thought it was nice that her date had planned to cook for her. On their third date, he invited her for a meal at his place and claimed that he had prepared it. However, she noticed something that made her rethink the entire evening and even their relationship.

The woman was impressed by the idea of a home-cooked meal at his place. However, when she arrived and saw the food, she could easily tell it was takeout from a local restaurant she had been to frequently. Instead of confronting him, she simply asked him for the recipe and the process. The man didn’t confess and went on to make up a story about how he made the meal, adding that he was passionate about cooking because his mom had taught him. The woman began to worry that if he could lie about something so trivial so confidently, how much more had he been hiding from her. On one hand, she thought it might be cute because he wanted to put in the effort to make it seem as though he had prepared a home-cooked meal. However, the bigger concern was the lying and covering up.

Internet users assured her that she wasn’t in the wrong for questioning the foundation of the relationship. u/Sunbro_Kev wrote, “Early lies are a big red flag.” u/Freyjas_child added, “He lied about something completely inconsequential. He went out of his way to make up a story.” u/VideoPossible4068 remarked, “What a weird thing to lie about. It would make me paranoid about what else he's okay making up.”

Lies can quickly cause cracks in a relationship. Without trust, a relationship has no solid foundation. The best time to come clean about expectations and flaws is while you’re dating and still getting to know a person. However, people try to put on a perfect display of themselves and suffer. In another dating story, a man decided to meet with a woman after clearly discussing her no-child preference.

She had even asked him over text whether he had children or ever wanted them because she didn’t. During the date, when she brought up her friend’s pregnancy, the man casually revealed that he, too, had a child. She then asked why he had lied despite knowing it was a non-negotiable for her. He replied that he had kept the information to himself because he knew she wouldn’t agree to meet him otherwise. Not only did he lie to her, but he also disrespected a boundary that was clearly communicated. The woman ended the date right then and there.
