People who pay for premium seats expect a relaxed journey without any discomfort or inconvenience. Unfortunately, some fellow passengers don't always understand this fact. A Threads user, who goes by Cash, under her handle @lexiscash, shared a post on August 26, 2025, recalling one such instance. She was settling in for a 10-hour flight when a mother placed her toddler in the seat beside her. She was surprised to see her buckling the child's seatbelt, and kept wondering where the mom would end up sitting. The parent then made a remark that clarified everything and left the traveler disappointed.

The woman watched as the mother buckled her toddler into the seat beside her, then began placing their bags in the overhead bin. Confused about where the mother’s own seat was, the fellow passenger soon heard her tell the child that the “nice lady” would watch her while she went to her assigned spot. She then added, "Unless the nice lady wants to switch seats.” The traveler was taken aback. “I truly do not know where y’all find the audacity,” she said, noting it was a 10-hour flight. What left her enraged was that the mother never asked her to swap — she was telling the toddler they would be sitting separately. "Please stop thinking people should be inconvenienced for free," she remarked.

In other words, the mother appeared to be preparing the child for the possibility of remaining beside a stranger while she sat elsewhere, leaving the passenger to decide whether to intervene or accept the arrangement. The woman said she would not have switched seats anyway, particularly given that premium economy seats cost more. How much responsibility should parents expect from others when traveling with young children? Most travelers understand that flying with a toddler can be difficult. Children cry, become restless, and sometimes need help, particularly on long-haul flights. What can be harder to handle are entitled parents who expect others to tolerate the inconvenience and compromise for their children.

Psychologist-reviewed research published in Psychology Today suggests entitlement exists on a spectrum. Excessive entitlement is closely connected with narcissism, where people expect special treatment and believe they are more deserving of it than others. In this case, the mom assumed the woman would either want to switch or look after the child, not understanding that both options were equally unfair to her. Commenters also sided with the passenger. @Fiferstone wrote, “They cannot leave a young child next to a stranger.” @bombinmama said, "I’m with you. I will not be babysitting someone’s child I don’t know." @nica_marie0422 added, "I don’t switch seats when I’ve paid extra for a certain seat. Not my problem."
