A simple gesture from a stranger can become one that stays with us and imparts the most beautiful life lessons. A mom named Amy Williams (@mynameissnickerdoodle) shared how a cashier at a HEB grocery store left a strong impact through a magical encounter. She recalled a time she was struggling financially and fell 88 cents short while shopping. She was already at the cash counter and was embarrassed. As she tried to settle her bill to fit the money she had, the cashier glanced at her boys and immediately made a statement that left her feeling grateful. The mom mentioned that during that grocery trip, her “budget was tight.”

“It was one of those times in life where our one car needed new tires and our washing machine had just given out,” she wrote. She had only $27 with her and had planned to get only essentials. Williams took her boys along, two of them sitting in the shopping cart and the oldest walking with her. After she finished shopping, she thought she had money to buy hot dogs to treat her sons. She picked up the food item and headed to the cash counter with the rest of her stuff. Fixing her bill was Maria, a kind and efficient cashier. “My total rang up at $27.88,” the mom recalled. She was short of 88 cents. It was a busy line and Williams didn’t want to be a sorry case or hold people up.

She asked the cashier to take out the hot dogs and put them back. “She was in cashier mode and grabbed the hot dogs before they could be bagged,” the caption read. The woman was just doing her job but something made her stop. As she picked up the hot dogs to keep them aside, she saw the three boys. In that moment, something struck her and she instantly changed her mind. Placing the food into Williams’ bag, the cashier said, “No, honey. The hot dogs are on me today.” “I was so grateful to her, but embarrassed all at the same time. I was frustrated with where we were at in life at that time, even though we were trying our best,” Williams said.

The mom was taken aback and initially refused the offer but Maria insisted. The cashier assured the mom that the boys deserved a fun hot dog lunch. Though at the time Williams was uncomfortable, over the years, she realized how the cashier's simple act of kindness made a significant difference that day. She noted that even with all the time gone by, the woman’s “kindness was never forgotten.” “It wasn’t until just a few years ago that it really sank in exactly what such a simple act of love did for my heart and soul,” she wrote.

The family eventually got back on their feet and moved to another location but Maria is still in her mind to this day. She hopes to return the favor to the cashier if she can find her again. Until then, her act has echoed loudly the power of kindness that Williams hopes to share with others. @mamuthiessen wrote, “I've been in that place, I totally feel your heart. So grateful and yet ashamed at the same time. It's a hard but beautiful lesson we learn and never forget.” @bsatterfield0613 added, “So sweet. There are angels among us.”
