Successful man told his date she needed more than looks to deserve his lifestyle — her reply ended the night instantly
The standards people set in relationships often reveal more than they intend. It is easy to explain what you expect from a partner, but those expectations can sound very different when someone applies the same logic back to you. Instagram user Jennie Flaker Larsen, who goes by @divinelydisobedient, experienced exactly that during a horseback riding date with a man who spent much of their conversation talking about the realities of dating as someone with a successful career. At one point, he turned the discussion toward what he believed women needed to offer if they wanted the life he could provide. Larsen genuinely agreed with his point. What she said next, however, completely shifted the mood. Larsen shared the story on Friday, July 31, 2026.
After repeatedly reminding Larsen of the challenges of dating as a successful man, he eventually turned the conversation toward her and remarked that if she wanted "all of this," referring to the lifestyle he could provide, she needed to offer more than just her looks. Rather than argue or take offense, Larsen said she actually agreed with the idea that relationships should be about more than appearances. She then added that, from her own perspective, she could easily find someone with money any day of the week, meaning money and physical attraction alone were not enough to impress her either. The remark instantly changed the atmosphere.
Her date immediately stopped his horse, turned around, and asked her to repeat what she had just said. Larsen calmly repeated her point, explaining that she was simply applying the same standard to both people in the relationship. Moments later, he asked whether she considered the date over. Larsen then responded that she guessed it was, adding that perhaps he did not have more to offer than the very qualities he expected women to value.
The exchange quickly gained attention online, with many viewers debating whether her response exposed a double standard or simply reflected equal expectations in dating. @hoyvenon3 said, "But you never did answer his question: What exactly do you bring to the table besides your looks? All I heard from you was diversion." @susanfplatt commented, "What a perfect response to his audacity!" @amanda_flaker wrote, "Men out there thinking they are the prize."
Larsen's exchange also reflects what researchers describe as ideal-partner discrepancies, or the gap between what people expect from a partner and what they believe that partner actually offers. According to a study, these expectations are shaped not only by personal experiences but also by broader beliefs about relationships and the qualities people value most. Rather than changing someone's standards overnight, individual interactions often influence how closely another person appears to match those existing ideals.
In Larsen's case, the conversation was less about money or appearance and more about whether the expectations her date placed on a partner were ones he was equally willing to meet himself. Confidence becomes far more meaningful when it welcomes the same expectations it places on everyone else. Anything less risks becoming entitlement dressed up as self-worth.
