Tenant stopped playing late-night piano after a noise warning — then found a neighbor’s note revealing the heartbreaking reason she missed it
Simple everyday habits can take on a different meaning when they touch someone else's life. That was exactly what happened with TikTok user John Calabrese. The man received a handwritten note from his landlady asking him to be more mindful while playing the piano at night because a new neighbor had recently moved in. He later shared the heartwarming story on his handle @calabrese1976 on Monday, June 29, 2026. He skipped playing that night, only to receive another letter from the woman next door herself.

The man explained that he loved to play at night, and particularly indulged in the American rock band, the Grateful Dead. The landlady told him she had heard the music, and while it was nice, it was "a little loud and a little late for your new neighbor." Feeling guilty, he skipped playing the instrument that evening. The following day, he stumbled upon another note. Written by the new resident, she asked him if everything was all right, as she "didn't hear any piano last night." She added that her son Shane "isn't here anymore and he loved the Grateful Dead, and he played the piano."
Calabrese admitted he did not fully understand what the neighbor meant when she wrote that her son was no longer there. Even so, her words stayed with him throughout the day. That evening, he sat down at the piano and played songs by the Grateful Dead, hoping the music would bring some comfort. When he returned home from work the next day, he found one final handwritten note waiting for him. This one was much shorter but carried deep meaning. It simply said, "Thank you," followed by the neighbor's name, Bridget, along with a small drawing of a lightning bolt and a heart. The brief message told him everything he needed to know about how much the music meant to her.
Politeness between neighbors is truly important to ensure a peaceful living environment. In another incident, a woman on Reddit shared how she struggled to sleep due to loud TV noise coming from the apartment above late at night. Around 12:30 am, she decided she had no choice but to reach out and ask for the volume to be lowered. She said, "I had to get out of bed and go ask the upstairs neighbor to turn it down," adding that she had never even met the couple before. To avoid a confrontation, she used the door camera to send her request instead. The recipients responded quickly and turned the volume down without any argument.
Later, a handwritten note and a bottle of wine were left at her door as an apology. They said, "I’m sorry for not being considerate about the volume." They also added, "I got too carried away with watching recaps from the Super Bowl," before thanking her and even mentioning her Christmas cookies, saying, "In positive news, the cookies you made for Christmas were amazing!"
