Traveler refused to swap her aisle seat so a woman could sit with her husband — what followed made the 10-hour flight unbearable
Air travel can be stressful when passengers disagree over seating, especially on flights that last several hours. While some travelers are willing to exchange seats to help others, no one is obligated to give up a seat they selected. Content creator and blogger Tomiko Harvey faced this situation during a long journey home when another passenger asked her to move so she could sit with her partner. She refused the request, but the woman's reaction made the flight uncomfortable. Harvey shared a video on Instagram on October 9, 2026, under the handle @tomiko.harvey, showing the woman sitting beside her during the journey. She also explained the circumstances behind the unusual incident in her caption.
Harvey revealed that she was returning from Kazakhstan after her father's death and was connecting through Istanbul on a flight to Washington, DC. She had chosen an aisle seat, but a woman asked her to switch places so she could sit next to her husband on a flight that lasted more than 10 hours. When the content creator refused, the woman spent the next three hours crying beside her. Confused by her reaction, Harvey eventually asked whether someone had died. The woman said nobody had passed away and explained that she just missed her husband and wanted to rest her head on his shoulder. Her husband was seated two rows ahead in a middle seat, wearing headphones and sleeping peacefully.

The request meant Harvey would have had to spend the long flight in a middle seat simply to make the couple more comfortable. She also pointed out that the wife wanted her to give up her preferred seat for the entire journey. When the plane landed, Harvey responded sarcastically, telling her, "Good job. Look at you, surviving without your husband for 10 hours." Disagreements over seats can be difficult to handle, but respecting another passenger's choice is an important part of sharing a flight. The content creator's comment showed how unreasonable she found the situation, particularly after being asked to make a sacrifice for someone else's convenience.

Harvey also questioned why travelers believed they could expect strangers to exchange seats, especially on long-haul flights. She suggested that couples who wanted to sit together should book their seats in advance or pay for seat selection rather than rely on another passenger to move. Her remark highlighted how differently people can view time apart from their partners. She also joked, "Now I need to reevaluate my marriage because I clearly do not love my husband enough."

While the wife got emotional when Harvey refused to give up her seat, another woman went to unusual lengths to get what she wanted in a separate incident. A passenger refused to exchange his window seat with an elderly woman's husband. Later, she pretended to have a medical emergency, but her husband revealed the truth. After landing, security escorted her off the plane as passengers reacted with shock. The incident left fellow travelers questioning her actions and applauding as she was led off the plane.
