Learning a new language often opens doors in quiet ways. For one university student, it opened a door to an unexpected truth. A simple wish to improve her French led her to uncover a shocking truth about her friend’s long-distance partner. The story was shared by Instagram user, Eylül, (@eylulnim) in an Instagram post on November 7, 2025. What was a casual effort to learn French by a polyglot ended up exposing a hidden double life tied to social media.

In the video, she began by saying, “This is the story of how we found out that my friend's long-distance boyfriend was cheating because I decided to learn French.” While studying at university, she joined a French class and quickly bonded with classmates who loved languages. "We were all just language nerds, and we were giving each other learning tips." One girl from the group often spoke about her French boyfriend, whom she met during an exchange semester in Paris. She praised how helpful it was to date a native speaker and talked about "how nice" her partner was. Later, the man in question visited Korea, met his girlfriend's friends and had a decent hangout, but she didn't pay close attention to his face. She jokingly named him “voiture” and never thought much more about him at the time.

By the end of the semester, she felt her French was not improving enough. She took her own advice and created a new TikTok account only to follow French-speaking creators. Instead of influencers, she chose smaller accounts that offered more accurate accents and natural language use. One day, while scrolling, she came across a Paris-based girl’s video doing a trend that revealed her boyfriend. The man looked oddly familiar to "voiture," which made her decide to look into it more closely. She zoomed in, took a screenshot, and sent it to her friend. She messaged, “Oh my God this guy looks a lot like 'voiture,' remember when he made fun of Asians, well white people look a lot like each other too.” Her friend replied, “Girl, that's actually him.”

It soon became clear that “voiture” had been in another relationship for four months. Shocked, her friend called his mother, and the truth fully unraveled. The creator ended the story with humor and advice, “My friend calls voiture's mother, everyone's happy, so learn that language this year, you don't know what lives you might be saving.” In the caption, she added, “We shall talk about how language learning might contribute to the sanity of those around you!”

The video went viral, garnering over 1.4 million views. Many viewers flooded the comment section with shock, humor, and support. Several commenters also shared their own experiences of accidentally uncovering cheating. @ilalalaras recounted, "Once I learned German at a German institute in Jakarta. That was around my last year of college. After like two terms, I found out that one of the girls there was my ex-boyfriend’s girlfriend, and I was the other girl. They’d been in a relationship for like two years." @mustang.sammymo exclaimed, "Your friend calling his mother is just pure gold." @alibonss mentioned, "Her calling voiture's mum is the happy ending we all yearned for."
