Walmart associate struggled at checkout as his right hand shook violently — what he revealed after repeatedly apologizing broke the shopper’s heart
The pressure to keep customers happy can make service jobs even harder when employees are treated without basic courtesy. One shopper was reminded of this during a routine trip to Walmart. Instagram user Jacob Householder, who goes by @jacobhouseholdr, shared his experience on November 3, 2026, and mentioned that he was checking out his items when an employee came over to help with a barcode that wouldn't scan. The worker apologized as he struggled to enter the item manually, and what he shared next left the shopper heartbroken.
Jacob explained that he was shopping at Walmart when one of his items wouldn't scan at the self-checkout. An employee came over to help, but when he couldn't find the product in Walmart's app either, he had to create a listing manually and enter its price. As he struggled to type, Jacob noticed that his right hand was shaking badly. The worker kept apologizing and finally explained, "I'm not left-handed. I just can't use my right hand right now." When Jacob asked what had happened, the employee told him that "a customer had been really hard on him and that he was having a bit of an attack." Jacob was stunned by what he heard and couldn't understand how someone could be so cruel to a person simply trying to do their job.

Jacob said the encounter stayed with him long after he left the store. He couldn't stop thinking about how badly someone must have treated the employee to leave him so shaken while he was just trying to do his job. It also made him wonder if people were forgetting to show basic kindness to one another. He took to Instagram to remind everyone to be more patient with people in service jobs, whether they're grocery store workers, waiters, or drive-thru employees. As he put it, "We're all human. And we just can't treat people like this. We need to be better than that."

Many viewers praised Jacob for showing concern for the employee. @phillyboy246 commented, “You are awesome for speaking up about this. You're a great example to those around you, Jacob.” @ciera_b14 wrote, "You are high on my list of the kindest people I know...the world is lucky to have people like you.” @christina_drummond added, "I feel your sorrow. We should be better. It is so easy to just be kind."
Unfortunately, not everyone remembers that service workers deserve the same patience and respect as anyone else. A similar story involved a former retail employee who dealt with a customer who wouldn't stop bragging about how much money he lost every hour his phone wasn't working. When the customer demanded to speak to a manager, the employee calmly pointed out that waiting 15 minutes would cost him $5,000 based on his own claims. The response left the customer with little to say. It's another example of how some customers look down on service workers, only to be humbled when someone finally pushes back.
