Woman broke her rule against first dates at strangers’ homes for a police officer — 90 minutes later, she deleted the dating app
One of the reasons dating apps are flourishing is that people get a head start on impressing others through a curated profile. Whether those claims and impressions are actually true is revealed only after further conversation. A TikTok user named Katie, who goes by @kttravel97, shared a post on July 5, 2026, after she matched with a man on Bumble and ultimately swore off the app. The man claimed to be a police officer, and for the time being, she chose to believe him. Ahead of their date, she had one rule: she didn’t want to go to his place. Her match, however, insisted on meeting at his home, turning a simple dinner into a bizarre experience.

The stranger went against Katie’s rule and invited her to his place, insisting they would get dinner after. Katie eventually found herself seated on his couch. He first told her he needed to put on his shoes and would only take a minute, then assured her he was only having one drink. He then turned on the TV and began watching a show. Even though she tried reminding him about the promised dinner, he kept brushing it off. Later, he tried to get closer to her, and she refused. He then put on another show, watched for an hour, and told her he was headed to bed, asking if she wanted to join him.
It became clear that the man had only one expectation from the meeting, and once Katie realized that, she told him she was leaving. She admitted that there were several other moments when she considered going home, but stayed because she was unsure. She also mentioned that she chose to believe his profession because there wasn’t any concrete way to know whether he was telling the truth until she met him and spoke with him more.
She had also clearly told him that she had watched far too many documentaries and, for safety reasons, didn’t want to go into anyone’s home, especially on a first date. He ignored that boundary, never took her to dinner, and showed his interest only in a sexual relationship. Another bizarre part was how he made no eye contact, barely spoke, and hardly interacted with her while watching TV.
Following that night, she decided she was done with creeps from dating apps and swore off Bumble. The BBC shared data from a 2023 Axios study of US college students and other Gen Zers. It was revealed that 79% of the group were ditching dating apps. There were multiple reasons for this, the major ones being burnout from online dating and the need to find authentic ways to meet and connect with potential partners.
