Saying no is a complete answer, even without a justification. A woman recently reflected on an interaction that left her thinking about why she had struggled to say no directly. Content creator Emma Blodgette discussed the experience in an Instagram post shared under the handle @wearinginthewings on October 3, 2026. It all began when a stranger she met on the train asked her out. She then reconsidered her response to his question and what it revealed about her experiences setting boundaries with men.

Blodgette explained that she was traveling on the subway when a man struck up a conversation with her. She found him pleasant enough, and the two spoke for a while. Before the conversation ended, he asked if she would like to meet for a drink sometime. Her immediate response was to tell him, "Sorry, I have a boyfriend." However, she later realized that she was not actually in a relationship and wondered why she had not simply said no. She felt sad when she realized that she had used another man's supposed presence to make her refusal acceptable. She explained that, in her experience, men could treat a direct rejection as an invitation to keep trying.

Saying she had a boyfriend, on the other hand, seemed to end the discussion. She described how telling a man she was not interested could lead to more questions or attempts to change her mind. She recalled that a refusal could be met with responses such as, "Oh, are you sure?" or "Come on, I could show you a good time." These reactions had made her feel that saying no was not always enough to end unwanted advances.

Blodgette also questioned whether she was overthinking the interaction, acknowledging that the man might have accepted a direct rejection without any argument. Still, her past experiences shaped how she responded in that moment. Her reflection raised an important point about personal boundaries: everyone should be able to decline an invitation without needing to justify the decision or claim they belong to someone else. A clear refusal should be respected, regardless of a person's relationship status.

Not everyone knows how to handle rejection with grace, and some let their ego get in the way. In another incident, a woman witnessed a man insulting a stranger after she refused to give him her number. He called her "fat" and "ugly" in public. Unwilling to ignore his behavior, another woman stepped in and confronted him, telling him, "You are disgusting." When he began threatening her, she decided to contact the police and declared, "I am reporting you." Although officers arrived, the man managed to avoid them. She later followed up, urging others to help women facing harassment and to always speak up in such situations. “Don’t be a bystander," she advised.
