She rejected a man at a cafe after smiling at him — what happened after she returned from the bathroom made her stop doing it with strangers

Not every smile exchanged between strangers is an invitation for attention. One such gesture left trader Gabriella Goddard seeing public interactions differently. When she was around 19 or 20, she was sitting alone and working in a busy cafe when she smiled at a man across from her after noticing him looking at her. She meant nothing more than a friendly gesture, but what happened after she returned from the bathroom changed the way she interacted with unfamiliar men. Goddard shared the incident under her Instagram handle @gabriellaxgoddard on August 10, 2026.

After the young woman declined the stranger's offer to have drinks with him, the man moved back to his earlier seat. She then went to the bathroom, unaware that he had noticed where she was going. When she came back, she found him waiting outside. He stepped in front of her, grabbed her hair, and said, "Oh, you are just playing hard to get, aren't you?" The moment left her frightened because she was in an enclosed space and had not expected him to follow her. She immediately pushed his hand away, but he began giggling. Goddard later walked back to her table with tears in her eyes, trying to understand what had just happened.

The incident was especially upsetting because Goddard had not smiled at the man to invite attention or encourage him to approach her. She explained that she had always been a smiley and outgoing person who would smile when making eye contact with someone. In the cafe, she had done exactly that without any romantic intention. Her experience shows how quickly a harmless gesture can be given a meaning that was never intended.

Goddard also reflected on the phrase "not all men," while questioning how a woman could know which stranger is safe simply by looking at him. She said the experience had changed the way she viewed being a woman and made her more aware of possible risks during ordinary interactions. Although she could not remember everything that happened after she returned to her table, the fear and discomfort stayed with her. She shared how that one incident changed her entire perspective and how she now does not engage even in such simple gestures.

There is a big difference between being polite and showing interest, and the two should not be confused. This is what happened in another incident. During a solo run, a woman briefly acknowledged a stranger on her path before continuing as usual. She had no reason to feel concern until, about 40 seconds later, she looked back and saw the same man now running behind her. Realizing he was following her, she stopped and asked, "Why are you running after me?" He denied that he was following her, but she did not ignore her concern. Instead, she told him, "Get back!" until he finally turned around and left. The encounter left her shaken and reminded her to stay aware while running alone, even when everything initially seems normal.
