Woman was furious with her mom for editing Christmas photo using AI Apps. When she saw her son's photo, she did a double-take
A person might be forced to set strict boundaries with their loved ones in some situations. A woman also had to do that when her mom edited her family's Christmas photo with an AI app without her permission. The woman felt hurt that her Christmas photos were "not good enough" for her mom. However, she was really shocked when her mom edited her baby's photo and made him look completely like a "robot baby." So she confronted her mom about the same. The woman later wondered if she was wrong, according to her Reddit post, where she goes by u/chaos1477.
The couple had their first baby in October this year. So they recently took some "quick Christmas photos" at their house and decided to send them to their immediate family via text. "We had the Christmas tree and part of our coffee corner as the background, as it's proven rather difficult to find another more 'picturesque' background in our home at the moment (having a newborn is no joke, haha)." Instead of setting a timer and taking a photo, the family decided to take a video and then screenshot the best frames to send out. Everyone seemed to like the photos, so the new mom felt happy and accomplished about getting at least some Christmas family photos.
Even if the photos were not "professional grade," the couple was happy. "A day later, my mom sent us back the photos we sent out, but I noticed that all the backgrounds are different (AI-generated) and some of them even generated the lower half of our bodies (it looked absurd)." The woman expressed that she was not a big fan of AI. Nonetheless, she didn't say much to her mom at that time. However, the woman was shocked when her mom sent an AI-generated photo of her baby lying on his stomach with his head up and with a different background. "It straight up looked like a robot baby and that's when I got pretty upset." She immediately called her mom and asked her how she got the photos to look like that.
"She got a little defensive and told me it was just an app called 'Gemini,' which is, as I know, an AI platform." The woman told her mom that she didn't want her child's face to be on an AI platform. "She tried to say it’s 'safe' because it's an app rather than a website." The woman added, "It made me feel like our pictures weren't good enough for her." The mom responded, "It's not that it's not good enough, it's just…insert long pause for her to think...I thought it would be nice." The mom called the daughter again and said, "She thought it would be nice to look like professional photos for you." The mom eventually agreed that she wouldn't do it again, but the daughter felt bad for setting boundaries during the holidays.
People supported the woman in the comments section of the post. u/Meallaire wrote, "If she's desperate to do AI touch-ups, either she runs it locally (not an app or a site, from a computer) with the internet off, or she doesn't do it at all. Does she want your kid to end up in an AI dataset? Does she know what kind of disgusting things people can generate? Yeah, you were not at all too harsh." u/Vdavwill commented, "She meant well and you set the boundary without making her feel bad."
