Client gave her masseuse strict instructions not to talk during the session — then refused to tip for the most unbelievable reason
Professionals who work in service are trained to do and say certain things on the job to elevate the experience altogether. If customers specifically request that employees skip certain parts of the service, the employee has no option but to comply. A Reddit user who goes by u/Best-Priate5073 shared a post on Monday, August 17, 2026, recalling an experience with a woman who left him confused after giving him a long list of instructions while booking a massage online. The masseuse focused on one of her strict commands — not to talk. He followed everything to a T, only to receive no tip for the most absurd reason.
My latest new client set the strictest rules I’ve ever heard. I obeyed every one of them. She still claimed I was the problem and lost her mind.

Some of the requests were “Focus on her upper back, shoulders, and neck,” and “Do not check in with me at all.” She added that she didn’t want any small talk or extras and expected him to finish on time. “Just do the work,” she said. The masseuse confirmed these instructions in person and did just that. After 90 minutes, he stopped. “Wait, that was it?” she asked before spilling a list of complaints. “The pressure felt hard toward the end, and you never even checked on me. Most therapists give a little extra time,” she whined. The worker reminded her that she had specifically asked him not to check on her or give her extra time. But she replied, “Well, I didn’t mean it like that. You should have known to check anyway. I’m not tipping for that.”
The masseuse was a little surprised by her behavior. The woman specifically pointed out that she “hated” it when therapists asked questions about the massage while she was in the session. So he was just trying to create a pleasant experience for her. “Every time I felt her body tense or shift, I kept going at the same pressure she had asked for. No adjustments. No questions,” he explained. Yet, the client kept complaining. The employee calmly told her he didn’t need her to tip and that the session had already been paid for. As she made comments about the service, the man decided to pack his things in silence, as she had instructed.
“I have never felt more at peace ending a session. Was I supposed to ignore the very clear rules she set and somehow read her mind instead?” he asked. Commenters quickly agreed with the man. u/Greywatcher said, “There would not have been any way to make her happy.” u/Viperbunny noted, “She didn't want to tip you. She was going to find a reason.” u/R-Dragon-Thunderzord remarked, “I wonder how many other people she tries this no-win scenario on.”
Some customers find the most bizarre reasons not to tip. While their absurdity may seem hilarious, it can feel disrespectful toward a worker who has tried their best to ensure quality service. In another instance, a waitress was stunned to see a couple leave no gratuity on a $65 bill. Defending his actions, the man wrote on the check, “No tip because it was very rude to ask my wife and I if we wanted separate checks.” The server had no idea whether the duo was married or just on a date, and it was part of her job to ask if the payment was being split and not make assumptions. Yet, the man took offense, suggesting that he either never wanted to leave a few more dollars or was just being petty.
