Deputy looking for missing 86-year-old grandma finds a dog 'asking' her to follow him — and ended up saving her
When feelings, instinct and skills are combined, it becomes a powerful weapon in battling threats and dangers. The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office reported how a dog named Eeyore managed to save the life of an 86-year-old woman. According to the Bradenton Herald, the officers had set out on a search for the woman after her husband called in and reported her missing. As they assured the elderly man and made their way in search of the woman with barely any leads, they found the canine. The officer approached the dog and gently asked him one question and the smart animal immediately knew what to do.
It was around 10.30 at night and the elderly woman had taken Eeyore, her son’s dog, out on a walk. Usually, the duo gets done quickly but when she didn’t return after a long while, her husband called for help. “She never takes more than 10 or 15 minutes. It’s almost an hour now!” the worried man said in footage captured by the officers. They took a description of the woman and dog and set out to find her. As they drove around the area she might have been in, they soon came across the canine. “There’s the dog,” said Officer Devon Miller. She got out of her vehicle and gently approached the canine to ask him one question.
“Hi, baby! Where’s your mama?” she asked. The dog, though scared at first, was able to understand that the officers meant no harm. He then started walking ahead, trying to lead the officers somewhere. Officer Miller continued to encourage the dog. “I don’t know where your mama is. Can you show me?” With determination and a hurried pace, the dog walked her a little further onto a corner. Despite the dark and uncertainty, the canine made his way to his grandma with the officer. Miller took over after Eeyore brilliantly did his job. The elderly woman had reportedly fallen and needed assistance.
Fortunately, she was not seriously injured and was alert and conscious when she was discovered. She immediately called the medics to ensure she was okay and was safely escorted back home. As they caught up on what happened while waiting for the medics, Miller shared how the loyal canine executed her rescue. “I was in front of that house right there and then the dog ran up to me,” she explained. His actions even left the grandma stunned and proud. Through it all, the sweet pet stayed by his grandma’s side. Officer Miller commended the dog, saying “Good job,” and acknowledging him.
Eeyore not only put on courage but also stayed by the woman’s side, sensed help around and made his way to and back astutely. “I’m not even his owner. I’m his grandmother. He wouldn’t leave. He kept coming back to me,” she said. “You’re a good boy! Grandma loves you,” Miller was heard telling Eeyore. The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office also commended the dog in their post and said, “Sometimes heroes come with four legs and a wagging tail! Eeyore's love and instincts brought the elderly resident the help she needed!”
