Dog noticed woman wasn’t waking up from sleep—his one move using his mouth saved her life

Dogs have a fierce loyalty and love for their owner to a point where their safety matters more than everything else. A woman named Alison Albin credits her dog, Jasper, for saving her life, per USA Today. The service dog sharply noticed something off with his pet parent and when he tried to wake her up, he received no response. He quickly jumped into action and with a single move, rescued her from something life-threatening.

Jasper came into Albin’s life when she was diagnosed with Addison’s disease. According to Mayo Clinic, the condition is a rare one, wherein cortisol and aldosterone hormones are insufficiently produced. This condition can cause dizziness, low blood pressure, low sugar, extreme pain and weakness among other symptoms. It can also be life-threatening, and Albin had experienced a nearly fatal instance. Her family was worried about her health and her security and that’s when they came across Jasper. The service dog was trained to be her companion and monitor her sugar and blood levels.

The canine spent two years with Albin and wherever she went, there was no worry because her furry companion had her back. Jasper’s task would be more instrumental during the night when Albin was asleep and unable to monitor herself. He would usually touch her face or use his paws on her hands to try and get her to wake up. One night, the dog detected unusually low blood levels and immediately stepped into action. His duty was to wake the woman up so she could get a treat before her levels dropped even further.

Unfortunately, this time, as Jasper was trying to wake his owner, she wouldn’t wake up. The canine quickly realized things were more serious than usual and knew he had to wake her up before it was too late. He quickly rushed to her feet and gently put his foot into her mouth. The unusual trick worked and the woman was abruptly awoken. “I woke up at 3 am with my foot completely in his mouth,” she said. She added that her blood sugar had dropped to 59. She quickly understood and rushed to fetch herself a treat. “I don’t know what possessed him to take my blanket off and chew at my toes,” she remarked.

With tears in her eyes, Albin credited Jasper for “saving my life.” “It’s so touching to know that his whole life, he’s thinking about me, how to help me, how to save me,” she said. As a way to reward him, the woman went out to get a treat and got him a couple of colorful stuffed toys. She surprised him with them all, adding immense thanks for his astuteness in saving her life. His act will always be significant to the woman. Laura Lee Fariello said, “Now that is a service dog.” Mary Foster added, “Great dog — and I am sure a good human too.”
