His roommate tried to inspect his room while he was away after he gave one month's notice — but one missing item stopped her plan cold

The man also shared that he had been turning down his housemate’s romantic advances for quite some time.

Living with a difficult roommate can be exhausting, but someone who refuses to respect boundaries makes it even worse. Most people try to keep the peace and let smaller issues slide. Still, there comes a point when patience runs out. For a Reddit user who goes by @u/4thReaper, that moment arrived just as he was preparing to move out. His housemate insisted on scheduling an inspection while he wasn’t home. Despite repeated requests to keep strangers out of his room while his belongings were still inside, she refused to listen. That’s when he decided to take matters into his own hands. He shared the story along with screenshots of their chat on Reddit on July 18, 2025.

Things escalated when his housemate scheduled a house inspection for a time she knew he wouldn’t be around. He made his stance clear: “Don’t let strangers in my room when I’m not there, and all my stuff still is.” He even asked her to move it to Sunday when he’d be available. She refused, insisting she could do as she pleased since she needed a new roommate quickly. So, when everything failed, he simply removed his door handle, making it almost impossible to enter the room. Sometimes, politeness only goes so far, and boundaries need to be enforced in ways people can’t ignore.

The user also shared that he had been turning down his housemate’s romantic advances for quite some time. Over the months, the atmosphere between them grew increasingly uncomfortable, which ultimately pushed him to move out after giving one month's notice. That added context made many readers pause. It raised the question of whether her insistence on pushing through the inspection, despite his clear objections, was simply about urgency or something more personal.

The situation escalated further when she threatened to call the police after he told her, “Don’t say you weren’t warned.” He later admitted that the phrasing wasn’t ideal and could easily be taken the wrong way. However, he clarified that it wasn’t meant as a threat, but rather a warning that she wouldn’t be able to access the room if she went ahead with her plan anyway.

The comment section erupted after learning she threatened to call the police, with many jokingly questioning whether she believed authorities would actually support invading someone else’s privacy. @u/Playful_Site_2714 expressed, "Who is going to 'inspect' anyhow? Landlord? New roommate? She can't have people in if you are not given prior notice. And explain the purpose of the inspection." @u/steelcryo remarked, "So she's just a roommate and not a landlord? In that case, she doesn't have any right to show your room ever, regardless of a 24-hour notice or not. Demanding you let them in whenever she feels like it is extra hilarious with that in mind."

Some mentioned how even landlords needed to give notice before visiting their own property, because that would be an invasion of privacy. Meanwhile, @u/ashimo414141 commented, "Posts like these make me glad I live alone and that my landlord doesn’t know how to text. Much prefer the phone conversations and extra expense of having no roommates," making us all appreciate living alone a little more. At the end, the original poster even clarified that no, she wouldn't manage to find a way to open the door. "She's not the brightest spark, bless her," he said, which made the situation even more hilarious.
