Man kept mimicking neighbor’s parrot until its owner knocked on his door — with a strange request
A person might form a friendship in the most unexpected ways. However, when a man started mocking his neighbor's parrot by repeating the sounds the bird made, he was not expecting to become the parrot's friend. He was frustrated by the constant noise the parrot made at all times. So he decided to irritate the bird by mimicking the sounds it made. Nonetheless, he hadn't expected his neighbor's response to his imitation, or to become the parrot's soulmate, per a Reddit post by u/NameLEsstp.
"I live in an apartment where the walls are thin enough that I can hear my neighbor's TV, phone calls and unfortunately, their parrot," the man began. "This parrot is a very beautiful animal, but makes me want to rip my hair out and do things I am not proud to admit." He pointed out that the parrot had become his "morning alarm" over the past few months. So around two weeks ago, the man decided to get back at the parrot by "mocking his sounds back." He would repeat the parrot's whistles, squawks and much more. "We built up a little routine, kind of like distant, angry roommates communicating through bird calls. Sometimes I would even initiate it." The man admitted that it was a "strange" thing to do.
But then one day, the man's neighbor knocked on his door and had a really "odd" look on her face. "Apparently, ever since I started doing my 'bird banter,' her parrot has become obsessed with me." The man hadn't imitated the bird call in two days and the woman had noticed a change in her parrot's behavior. "She said he paces and screeches when I stop responding. She even showed me a video, which was such an awkward experience." The woman revealed that her parrot used to have a "parrot friend" a few years ago, but that bird was dead. She felt that her parrot could really use a new "bird companion." He went on, "Anyway, she asked me to make a couple of bird sounds as she put a treat in its cage to see if it would eat."
The man reluctantly agreed to do the same, even when he felt quite "humiliated" while producing the parrot sounds to test the woman's theory. He was surprised to see that the parrot actually started eating and playing. "Long story short, I became the object of a parrot's affection and my neighbor asked if I could 'talk to him for a few minutes a day.' Even gave preferred times if I'm home." The man had unintentionally started a "long-distance relationship with a bird" and had become his "soulmate." People shared their thoughts on the incident in the comments section of the post.

That being said, he picks who he talks to and what words, phrases and sounds he learns. You have been chosen and now have a friend forever!" u/Choice-Education7650 commented, "My brother-in-law had a parrot. One day, he answered the door to find police officers doing a wellness check. A neighbor had called because they heard crying. It was the bird saying, 'Poor Larry.'" u/MistressLyda remarked, "Humiliated? You have the power to whistle joy into what is basically a feathered toddler. You are a good egg. Keep on flapping."
