Plus-size passenger froze after seeing fat-shaming texts about her on an older couple’s phone — what they did next turned the flight against them
Flying can be an uncomfortable experience for many travelers, but sometimes the hardest part has nothing to do with the flight itself. Ashlyn Delaney, who posts on TikTok as @i.am.ashe, shared her experience on July 29, 2026, recalling how she had to go through a deeply upsetting encounter on a Delta flight. The woman constantly found the elderly couple beside her making fun of her and tried to ignore it for the most part. However, what they did after bodyshaming her on text made her call the authorities.
Ashlyn said she was sitting in a Delta Comfort seat next to an older couple when she noticed them looking at her and making faces. She glanced at the wife's phone and realized she had written in Spanish, “There's only one fat person on the flight. And guess who's she sitting next to?” That comment itself wasn't what upset her most. She then noticed that the duo had secretly photographed her. The fact that they took pictures of her while she was sitting in her seat and minding her own business felt disrespectful and frustrating. On confronting them, they quickly denied the accusation. Yet, the passenger took a stand for herself.
As she prepared to speak with a supervisor, another couple sitting nearby stepped in and were willing to switch seats with her. Ashlyn had been holding back her emotions until a kind traveler asked if she wanted to move, and the offer nearly made her cry. “We've been watching the whole thing. It's extremely disgusting," she said to the victim. The authorities were involved, and thanks to the other empathetic couple, she even got proof of the passengers trying to delete what they previously captured on the phone. A supervisor apologized and offered to help. In a follow-up video, Ashlyn finally managed to submit a complaint and receive some acknowledgment for it.
The reason why she was adamant about taking action was to ensure that fellow plus-size women don't have to go through something similar. She recalled feeling conscious throughout the flight to the point where she didn't even have a snack, and never wanted another to witness something so cruel. Viewers also rallied around her. @kittykatlove77, wrote, “The couple should have been kicked off the flight.” @callmehoney812 said, “Adults who behave like bullies are just miserable. Unfortunately, body-shaming in public is not rare.
In another similar story, Savannah Phillips recalled sitting beside a man who texted someone that he was next to “a smelly fatty.” She said she was silently crying until another passenger noticed what was happening, switched seats with the man, and stayed beside her for the rest of the flight. The gesture left the woman deeply grateful, and she called him "my hero" while recalling the story.
