Student refused to sit beside classmate of opposite gender citing religion — school backed teacher with one clear response

The teacher wasn't targeting a religion; they were simply trying to keep the classroom rules fair for everyone.

Teachers often have students from different backgrounds, beliefs, and expectations, but they need to make sure the same classroom rules apply to everyone. One teacher found themselves in a tricky situation when a student refused to sit beside a classmate of the opposite gender, explaining that their religion did not allow it. The teacher, who goes by u/Gla2012 on Reddit, shared the experience on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, but when the teacher turned to the school's administrators for guidance, the response left little room for debate.

The teacher said the situation started with a student who was being disruptive in class. After reminding them about the classroom expectations and speaking to them outside, the teacher eventually followed school policy and asked them to move seats. That was when the student objected, saying that "due to their religion, they couldn't sit next to a pupil of the opposite gender." With the class already overcrowded, the teacher sent the student to another class and later asked the school administration for guidance. They had a powerful response that supported the teacher's decision: "We are a non-denominational school; your class will follow your rules," adding that students who wanted religious schooling could choose a different school.

The teacher's concern was not about any particular religion and more about maintaining the same classroom expectations while respecting that students come from different backgrounds. They appeared to feel that making exceptions based on individual beliefs could quickly make an already difficult classroom situation even more complicated. Fellow Reddit users supported the teacher's decision to keep the classroom rules consistent for everyone. u/TissueOfLies mentioned, "If sitting by someone of the opposite sex offends your religion, you are free to attend a same-sex private school." u/aggie1391 remarked, "If they are that strict about religion, the parents should be sending their kid to a private religious school." u/Whisky-a-GoGo1 bluntly wrote, "Keep religion out of public schools. There are other options for your ridiculous policies."

Personal beliefs can sometimes create uncomfortable situations when they affect how people are expected to interact with others. In another story, a woman on a flight was asked to move because a male passenger said his religion did not allow him to sit beside her. When a flight attendant learned what was happening, she made it clear that the woman would remain in her seat and told the man that if his religion made him uneasy, he needed to manage his own arrangements rather than expect another passenger to accommodate him.
