Teen suffered severe foot injury after accident—a stranger recalled one lesson from his nurse mother to save her

Knowledge never goes to waste and often, seeing how it comes in handy can be quite impressive. A 15-year-old girl named Sophia Dibling would have suffered serious consequences of an accident if not for a stranger’s recall, BG Independent News revealed. The woman was crossing on Route 25 just north of Union Hill Road, Ohio, when she was struck by a car, resulting in a serious foot injury. With time being of the essence and amid the chaos, a stranger jumped into action to offer help. 23-year-old Logan Phillips was able to recount something he learned from his nurse mom and managed to help the teenager in the nick of time.

As the terrifying accident took place, Sophia was hurt and bleeding after injuring her leg. The Woods County Sheriff’s Office was called to respond to the situation. Phillips, who stood among a handful of people, also went out of his way to help. He noticed the accident taking place and approached with some water, the Sentinel Tribune revealed. However, when he arrived at the scene, he saw Sophia in desperate need of medical attention. He recalled a lesson his mom, who is a nurse, had shared with him. As he began to help, Sophia’s mom, Kathy, was baffled at his actions. She reportedly yelled at him but Phillips knew what he was doing and persisted as quickly as possible.

The young man took out his belt and wrapped it around Sophia’s bleeding leg to stop the bleeding. He had no medical training but trusted his knowledge and willingness to help and it bought much-needed time for medics to take over. “I remember seeing a brown belt around the girl’s calf and her foot was not bleeding at all,” Ohio State Patrol Lieutenant Matt Geer recalled. “He didn’t leave her side till someone else took his place. It meant so much that a random stranger would help,” the mom remarked, speaking of Phillips’s thoughtfulness.

The medics soon arrived and the 15-year-old was airlifted to a hospital and further treated. The duo even reunited after Sophia was well and the teenager thanked him with a special gift — a brand new belt. “Thank you for saving my life,” she gratefully expressed. Phillips was awarded by the Ohio State Patrol for his kindness and exceptional work. Geer commended the man’s astuteness and said, “This was a shining example of the impact a good Samaritan can have in the community.” He credited the stranger for saving the teenager’s life. “Only a handful of people stopped. It takes a special person to stop and render aid to someone they don’t even know,” he remarked.

Sandy Wiechman, coordinator for Safe Communities of Wood County, added that seeing the kind of bad things that happen, knowing of Phillips’s kindness, is a strengthening hope. “We’re just grateful you are here. We don’t get to come together on happy things very often,” he noted. Speaking of his response, the man noted that he was a father and did what any concerned parent should do. “Being a father, I couldn’t imagine seeing my kid like that,” he said.
